seems like i do everything to the extreme and my fish oil project is no exception. i am going to try to make a 55 gal drum of catfish oil, a 55 gallon drum of carp oil, one 55 gallon drum of crawfish oil and a 55 gal drum of oil that will remain a secret till i am done.

here goes the project

first i got 4 55 gallon drums with removable tops and one 30 gal garbage can some pvc pipe and fittings.

next you have to get the fish (catfish for this one) and chunk it up. this barrel will be added to with more fish till full the rest will be filled capped and left alone.

here is a picture of the venting system

this is the finished system the red garbage can is full of water. i plan on having all 4 barrels set around the red barrel and venting into it. now pray for sun and heat

CAN YOU SMELL WHAT THE BIGTIME IS COOKIN LOL

Did you put some sort of caulk or sealer around where your pvc enters the barrel-o-fish?

Where did you get the barrels? I have a heck of a time finding 55 gallon drums with lids here.

Our co-op sells the barrels with the lids but the barrels with the 1" and 2" ports are harder to find. I can usually get em from excavateing/construction co. but they have had oil or fuel in em. Easy enough to clean. I guess you could just drill the lid if ya cant get the ones with the ports? Good luck with the oil! If you dont mind, id like to see some pics of the contents after about 6 weeks or so? Just curious...lmao...shane

one lil tid bit regarding your venting ... remember as the warm air/gases build in the drum and expell into your drum of water ... the opposite can and will happen with cooling (evenings/night) ... a vaccum can occur and draw water from your venting drum ... thus contaminating your drum contents

glad you guys bring up little things i don't think of.

i will see if i can get a one way ball valve to solve the venting problem.

as far as pulling oil off i can suck it out of the larger whole if need be. do you really think this this needs to be done? if not drawn off wouldn't the oil stay on top and the rancid fish settle to the bottom. as long as its not mixed wouldn't it be ok?????

these are catfish from a cooling lake for a power plant. the water stays about 80 degrees and i have tried to eat them but they always taste like crap. they even stink something terriable when you clean them.
i will continue to eat the ones i catch out of the river and just use their heads and bellies for oil

How much oil you figure to recover from each barrel? I've seen guys barely get a cup of oil off a gallon of fish. Maybe 3-4 gallons?

Monitor your efforts with guarded attention over the course of the anticipated "oil slick."

Possumskinner, ADC and LTgrey can coach you on the flavors you might glean in the settle more than most here who have experience, and have played with knowing what you can expect to siphon off of the top - plus the juices on the bottom that have useful "oil" content of their own after all of it settles at the end of the ferment - without flies.

Good luck!

Jonathan

sure does seem alot easier to buy it..lol but i know i know no different then me planting a garden or reloading my bullets... Good luck with it, the one time i tried to make it there was a little oil and alot of that brownish/greyish mutter that smelled like it was conjured from the bowels of the sewage pond of [Please excuse my language... I'm an idiot]...lol
