The dried blood I had was a very fine powder and was a dark maroon in color. Dad had some, and when Dave Edwards passed away, I found more at his place identical to the stuff dad had. I believe Dave gave it to dad, because the bags were indentical.

Blood meal does give off a blood odor. When you fertilize with it, you have to worry about dogs trying to dig up your garden, looking for whatever they're smelling.

Blood is flash dried in a kiln, same as any other wet product you want turned to a meal form and not take the oil or fat from it. Soybean meal is done a bit different as its dried much the same but a large amount of high quality solvent is used to pull off the oil, the solvent and oil are seperated in a chamber and the solvent used again.
