More on the berries. From "Discovering Wild Plants" by Janice
Schofield. (This is technical stuff.) "Rubus chamaemorus is generally called cloudberry in Southern Alaska and salmonberry in northern areas. Since salmonberry is also a common name for the tall rubus spectabilis, use of the botanical name is necessary to eliminate confusion." (end quote.) Sounds confusing
smile Since the photo was taken in "northern area" Jeff and Takotna are correct, them cloudberries are salmonberries. smile

I will be really surprised to find that there are people that cultivate blueberries in Alaska. There are so many blueberries that grow in the wild, it seems like it would not be a good business.

The people in the very rural villages pick gallons of berries and send them to relatives in the 'big villages' (Anchorage and Fairbanks). Some people in rural villages pick berries to sell to those who don't have the time or the inclination to spend hours picking wild berries.

That is the point ! grin

You all could be making a TON of MONEY with ALASKAN BLURBERRIES shipped to , say for instance .. NEW YORK !! grin

Vermont has their Maple Syrup (New York Maple Syrup tastes better !!)

Wisconson has their Cheese

Florida has their fresh Oranges

A State as big as Alaska could supply the whole Lower 48 with all the Blueberries it could ever need. Might be able to EXPORT them to of all places ... CHINA!!!!!

I don't think ya get it CB. We don't don't want to waste our time picking berries or growing berries for a bunch of folks who haven't enough sense to move. Let'em do without. I can pick and eat my own.

Canvasback when we sell berries up here we certainly do not do it for a measly pint it is done in quarts minimum and salmon berries ( cloud Berries for those who have both) this year being a bad year for them are going for $100 a gallon on a normal year tehy run $300 a 5 gal bucket picked and cleaned and cleaning them suckers can be a PIA.
Jeff if my wife was there she would be going nuts our salmon berry crop got burned up in the heat this July

Sorry to hear yours burned up...its hit or miss here too...but this year was exeptionaly good...we had rain and cool temps all summer...just a few 70 or above days...perfect berry weather...I bet they are even thicker on the coast.
and if you pick them, when they are still too hard ...yes then you have to pluck them...(no fun)
I picked another gallon last night in about a half hour smile..they are soft but not white and [Please excuse my language... I'm an idiot] looking yet..next rain they will be too soft....then Blueberrys smile

Told the person that it would be like living in an Apartment again!! They said "EXACTLY"!! "NO WORK, NO UP KEEP , THEY MOW THE LAWN FOR YOU, ETC!! "

I TOLD HER , "I CAN MOW MY OWN LAWN, THANK YOU VERY MUCH !! mad "

SHE SAID : "Florida IS NOT LIKE NY , YOU HAVE TO GET A SPRINKLER SYSTEM AND WATER THAT LAWN EVERYDAY !! '

I then said, "WHAT ABOUT ALL MY TOOLS ?? mad

SHE SAID "YOU CAN'T TAKE THEM ALL DOWN THERE!! SELL THEM!!!!!!!!!

Now, at this point , I was a bit ticked off !!! mad

I said, "LOOK, GIRLY, FIRST OF ALL, I CAN MOW MY OWN LAWN, BEEN DOING IT FOR YEARS WITHOUT ANY HELP AT ALL FROM YOU!!.

2ND: I AM NOT SELLING ANY OF MY TOOLS JUST SO YOU CAN GO LIVE IN A CONDO!!

3RD: I AM NOT GETTING RID OF MY GSP !! (

WITH THAT, SHE HUNG UP THE PHONE ON ME !!!

Mosquito,,Snake, and Rat infested God awful State of Florida....

My Sister ! SHE is the one who has been pushing me to move my hobbling butt down to Florida!! Apparently, she can't seem to convince her Husband to spend his money to move down there . ( He carted her junk down to Florida when she had the BIG new Job!!.. She lasted less than a month down there, when her Husband had to fly down , load her belongings onto a U-Haul and drive that thing all the way back to NY. )

She is one BIG HEADACHE !!!!!!!!!
