What is the best way to remove springs and spring pins on a duke trap? Do I need to bend the ear down that holds the dog to get the spring pins out?

Catch a coyote in one? lol

Just razzing you. Actually if you remove the springs from behind the levers you should be able to work the pin out without bending the frame.

a 1/4" nut driver to slide down over the spring behind the lever works real nice for me, slide the nutdriver down over it and pop it out.

life is good......

I use a metal tube about 10 inches long. Slide it over and push the spring down and over. Leverage my friend!

here's a post I put together a couple years ago ... stuff like this is in the archives smile

Here is a easy way to remove and install coilsprings

To get started remove the pan from the trap (just makes it easier ...but not always necessary)

I use a screw driver and a nut driver to remove and intall springs on coilspring traps ... sorry no pic of a screw driver lol

Spring in lever groove

Insert screw driver ... prying outward

Continue prying until spring pops free ... watch your fingers ... it can get ya

Springs with tension released

Grasp spring pin ... lift and wiggle until free

Springs & spring pin removed

Using the nut driver insert spring into driver to install spring

With spring & driver in this postion ... remove nut driver popping spring into lever grove ... repeat steps as need for each remaing coil

Hope this helps

I checked the archives but must not have been putting in the correct phrases. Thanks for the info. I just wasn't sure if I was going to have to bend the spring pins or the dog ear to get the spring pins out. Thanks again.

Good post, I do it the same way possum skinner except I just use the screwdriver to put the springs back on. Looks like a nut driver or piece of tubing would make it easier to get them back behind the levers.

Eh...wot?

Great minds think a like! After doing one with the pan off for other reasons, i realized how much easier it is to change springs without the pan in place.

Excellent post P.S.!

I use the driver to remove the spring as well as I don't like rapped knuckles. Use the screw driver just to lift it slightly, slip the nut driver over, and work it around the lever. Much easier and safer.

I am with her, there is only so many times you can have bloody knuckles before it starts to get old.

Where the long arm of the spring first meets the lever, there's a small gap between lever and spring. An awl fits real good in there. A little leverage forcing spring arm inwards then slip on the tubing. That's how I do it.
