I like and do very similar to ringtail and Bogmaster
small fresh mud slicks guarded by a 1 1/2 coil ... also similar to what boggy does, I'll pull up a elongated clump of floating pennywort etc. kinda tight to the shoreline and put a 1.5 coil between the clump and the shoreline, place lure on the shoreline side
done like this the lure is just a extra potential draw as rats will investigate the fresh mud and be inclined to travel the narrow channel through/between the clump and shoreline without it
learning how to find and recognize active toilets and feedbeds will help you also
I have deep water impoundments that hold decent numbers of rats ... you'll be hard pressed to find a run unless you pull out your scuba gear ... in these waters the rats dine on various roots and a large percentage of their diet is fresh water mussels ... along the edges you'll find piles of mussel shells wear the rats continue to return to eat them ... at these spots I simply put a 1.5 coil on a drowner with a three hole brick tossed out into deep water ... the shorelines are covered with needle grass, you can also simply kick in a spot making it look like where a rat has been and place a trap on the approach ... take your knife and cut a big handfull of the tops and let them float on the surface just in front of your trap (eye appeal to help draw any swimming rats, looks like a rat has been feeding ... a lil lure doesn't hurt when doing this)
on the tidal high ground tunnels or leads are numerous ... sometimes you can set them all sometimes you just can't ... tunnels through the grass and phragmities produce a good number of rats too ... those trails guarded by 110's will pick up rats and where you have rats you'll have a few mink too
so many ways to take rats ... trapping & snaring rats is fun and can be addictive I hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions. What kind of lure do you use on the grass hump sets. also what size trap do you like in that situation. What kind of snare sets would be good? They have to be completely covered in water here in maine.

I agree, the muskrats in our area are hurting too. Used to be if you found a beaver pond or a stream, you found rats, its not the case in my area anymore. Back in the spring I received a trapper survey form from the NYSDEC which I filled out. They had a question or comments section and I asked them if they knew what was going on with the rats but I haven't had a response yet.
Although I'd rather take mink anyday, I sure remember when we were kids trapping and you set conibears in runs and go down to the next run and start making a set and you'd hear the trap go off and there was a rat. That used to happen all the time!!! Tell them to many predators is one main factor. No control on birds of prey and what happens when thee are not kept in check? Animals they feed on takes a major hit.

I use #1 stoploss for the bulk of my rat trapping. With proper staking I have taken beaver up to 53 pounds and many coon in the over 30 pound range(here again--stake well). When making the artificial feeder hut--I put bait (fish or fatal attraction under the weeds I pile up. Tom

Good thread...if I hit a time when I am in a slump and losing confidence, rats are just the ticket to getting my head back in the game.

I never reccomend small traps for beaver, just stating the importance of sufficient staking.I have taken well over 100 beaver in the #1 stoploss---SET FOR RATS. Wrote an article for TPC a few years ago called, No Lathing Matter. It was about proper staking for muskrats, where coon and beaver are prevelent. To many times ,trappers use a piece of lathe or a a stick ,to stake rat traps. While this may be fine if all you had to worry about--in most instances it isn't. Always over stake--Never under stake. Tom

So a new question for you muskrat pros. When setting a 110 in waterways do you put the triggers pointed up out of the water or hanging down. I have alot of areas that have slides coming up on the land in numerous areas around bridges and just curious what ya'll do with your 110s.

So my next question is that we have gotten another 2-3 inches of rain over the past 2 weeks and the water is high. I have located runs next to a bridge and where the water meets the slides on the bank I set 110's with a carrot on the trigger I have been using the bread and butter lure by cavens on the carrot and also on the mud on the bank so that it leaches scent into the water. I have seen some humps coming from the rocks over land going down into ditch areas. I have fenced on both sides of the trap and placed some grass over the top of the traps to kinda act like creating a tunnel. The season has been open for 2 days and there are plenty of rat toilets all over the place and I havent connected on anything mink or rat for those 2 days. Am I doing something wrong that anyone can think of or does it usually take more then a couple days for these to connect. There is just so much sign that I am baffled why I dont have something already. Any ideas?

muskrats can be decieving and leave alot of sign in an area, i would set up some blind sets on those runs, or search out there dens and blind set those, the carrots are not a bad idea but rats are kinda difficult to bait, better off with blind sets IMO

I gang set a whole lotta areas where the trails meet the water. It seems each day it comes up dry though. I set all four sides of a bridge. I used some carrots on some water sets with the trigger facing up and only the top of the carrot at water level and a few drops of scent on or near the set Ive only caught 1 rat and its been 5 days since ive had that. I figured i would of had at least 1 or 2 more just because i have (what i thought) was every trail set, lol.

apples will deteriorate in water, a root type bait would work better. ie; carrots or turnips
