Just thought I would stop by again to see what trips other folk's triggers on their #110's before this thread dissolves to the back pages and gets lost in the drift.

I have tried everything under the sun with apples on the trigger! Half out all out all under so on. I personally have yet to take one muskrat with the set! I did however have some deer walk my creek and destroyed every single set trying to get at the apples!

On under ice sets...it shouldn't be a problem. However, I find on under ice sets when apples are used for bait they turn to mush...I use carrots or parsnips and have never experimented with styrofoam or strips of plastic.
In open water whenever I tried baiting a 110 I found 50% or greater sprung traps...
...I suggest a baited 160 if you want to go that route...you won't miss.

bmead, I am using them under the ice. With 110's I average 50% or more misses, with 160,s I average 30% misses

I don't like to use corn on triggers because you can catch ducks.I use apples and carrots under ice. There is a lake we trap that the water level is adjusted with a dam.The water level changes so often, that one day what was under water is above water the next, putting ducks at risk.

Having once had a large supply of golfballs some with muskrat chews already on them. I thought I would go for color and durability when I tried golfballs on 110 triggers under the ice. I used standard white, lime green, hot pink and orange. Sadly not one trap caught a rat. That is not to say that it would not work, it just did not work where I tried it. Maybe in a place with higher rat population it would work. Or maybe in the ponds on the golf course where the balls came from. Who knows but it would have been neat if it worked.

I have used apple under water but the I figured out they cannt smell underwater so I put pieces of wood painter red and white on the trigger.
