If that rubbed coon was put up and shipped for auction would they be able to tell it is rubbed?

That rub shows up on the leather as a black mark.
The graders would definetly catch that.

Greg, Thanks. Do both sexes rub like that or mainly the boars?

Notice where the lock is on this 'coon! Right behind the ears.
You don't get docked on big prime boars that are head snared!

With the foul weather we have been having up here in the North as of late and the colder temps, where should one be looking for the coon to be moving at?

GREAT thread!
I am looking for the best bait/lure to use when its COLD and Snow is covering everything. Temps are in the teens and single digits, and windchill is sub zero with no sign of letting up for at least a week. I need some fur! Can anyone help me out on my situation?
I have had corn out for deer so the coons know there is food, but I really dont want a deer running off with one of my traps. Should I just place the traps under logs or in an area that deer cant get and just blind set, or is there a bait that will pull their attention from the corn?

jdamet, do you have any Lil' Grizz? Also, foothold traps can't hold deer, they'll pull their smooth hoof right out.

No, I cant afford the good traps LOL. I only have a handful of 1.5's and 2's, footholds. I have held off of trapping this area because of deer season, but antlered just ended and most of the deer have gone nocturnal. Now, if I can get in there and get to trapping some coons, the noise from them might just make the deer come in during the day, when the coons are not around. Its a win win situation if I can pull it off.
Any bait suggestions, or should I just use the corn?

The real trick in winter 'coon trapping is simply...FIND THE 'COON....they will often change their traveling and eating habits as winter sets in...

I still have them coming to the feeders. Free food all winter long will keep them coming.
I made 3 sets around my feeder so we will see what happens in the morning. If it works, I will put 4 more around it.
I used corn and molasses as bait.

I used my Montgomery #2's and a Victor 1.5. I set them under deadfalls and put branches on the sides so deer couldnt get to them.
I am not sure if the small amount of corn will get them away from the feeder, but I wont know until I try!

I have pretty much thinned them out. I still have 1 that comes around, but he is REAL skittish at anything that is out of place. I guess 3 arrows going right over your head will do that to a squirrel.

Well, I didnt get anything in the traps by the feeder. I did get cleaned out though! Whatever it was, it came through the back of my set, completely destroyed the cubby.
Got them reset and made the cubby's a lot better and stronger so we will see what happens in the morning.
I did however get a rabbit in a #3 montgomery. That wasnt pretty!

I just put some bigger branches in the way and piled snow up a little higher on the food end. If they clean them out again I will set both ends.
