I'm looking for a good mink gland lure and I want one that has a real loud mink gland odor. Which brand would be best?

Kyle Kaatz makes one called "Piledriver." It definitely smells like a bottle of mink butts! LOL

Another one to try is Tim Caven's "Mink Master"

If'n you want somethin' potent, mix an ounce of good mink glands with an ounce of weasel glands!!! Goooo stuff!!!

I use it for otter, fox and maybe mink.

Too much mink musk in a mink lure will actually scare off many females and timid mink. If one want only big old males in their traps then pour the musk to the lure. A strong odor of mink musk represents trouble to an approaching mink as just like a skunk a mink doesn't let off it musk just for the fun of it. The secret to more successful mink lures is to limit the mink musk and replace it with other attractions. One more thing, one can not make a call lure for mink as nothing will call them far off their travel route. If one can formulate a lure that will call mink five feet or get them to stop at all then they have a good lure. Therefore the necessity for a loud mink odor is not necessary and might be detrimental. Ace

Asa said stated my thoughts and feelings as well. I dont need to repeat and I agree.

Mink musk is used by the mink in typically three ways. Sexual identification makeup properties, marking use and defensive use applications. The subtle suggestive odor of mink for mink trapping in a lure is most desired. If using for canine work more or a stronger presentation can be better at times.

Interesting. I may just have to stick with what I've been using, but I'm kind of stubborn and really enjoy experimenting with things and trying new stuff to see what will work for me on my line. That said, I'd still like to try some of the stinky stuff. lol I suspect Asa and Bob are correct as usual but perhaps the mink in mid-Iowa are not as timid and I'd just as soon leave the females for seed anyway. Keep the great info comming though guys, I appreciate it.

Good info here. I would also like to target the males more, especially later in the season.

I've caught more mink with a lure that has lots of muskrat musk and just a smidgin of mink and/or skunk. Keeps the coon interested, too.

nope. Just a dab of this and a dab of that. I don't think I ever make the mix exactly the same twice in a row. I'm never completely satisfied with it, either. I think it is more of a curiosity lure than anything.

ADC,

I don't use much mink lure over the course of a season. Usually someone will give me a bottle to try and I'll play around with it at a few sets here and there. I've caught mink at places I've used lure but can't say for sure that I wouldn't have caught them without it.

A lot of the creeks I trap are shallow. The mink don't drown right away. The do expel some musk. At times, enough musk is released, that I can smell that I have caught a mink before I can see that I've caught a mink. I don't think that many mink are scared off by this. A few at times probably, but from my experiences I would say it isn't the norm. I've caught mink in the same sets on consecutive days many times and even had a set do four in four days a couple years ago. Not bad for Ohio. I've had doubles just a few feet apart several times and both sets smelled of mink musk. One mink had to get caught first. Eric Space snares mink and most are alive and the sets smell very minky after a catch. He catches multiple mink at his locations and catches several doubles.

I'm sure a good mink lure used properly will probably help you. Buy a good one off of a reputable lure maker such as Asa or Bob. Observe and keep records of your experiences and then you can determine if it helps your catch. Use it as they recommend. But when you catch a mink and you can smell that minky smell, reset that trap because I believe it attracts way more that it repels.

I agree 100%, muskrat musk is hard to beat in mink lure formulation. Weasel musk would be a better choice than loud amount of mink musk as weasel musk is an enrager that sort of makes a mink angry when he smells his natural enemy and he dives right into a pocket set emitting that odor. Ace

CoonDuke: I wonder if anyone there ever thought of mixing some mink glands in with the fish bait to see if the two combined were more effective than each one used seperately. I'm sure the result would have concluded that the mixture outshined the singular usage of each substance. Ace

I use a similiar additive in a mink lure with trout oil and byproducts of fish and muskrats. It works extremely well I must agree Asa.

If your gonna use strong mink musk, You better have a stout trap and good drownin rig, Cause the otter love it. At least thats been my experience.
