I have two different samples of "authentic" tonquin musk. Both are from very reputable lure formulators who have been in the business for over 40 years.
The crazy thing is that both samples smell differently. Not just a little different, but a lot. I think a lot has to do with how the tonquin pods were handled, the tincturing agent and the quality of the pods.
One sample smells very similar to how my "not" authentic tonquin smells and the other doesn't. The one that doesn't seems to lack the penetrating odor and cinnamony back odor that the one that resembles mine does.
Like most essential oils/ingredients, the source makes all the difference.
The authentic tonquin musk that smells much like mine was given to me by Asa when I visited him this past summer.

I smelled a sample you had in Wisconsin from Asa. A very pleasant smell you kept wanting to return to and get another whiff !
Was that the authentic Tonquin Musk ?

I have no doubt I picked up the container at least a half dozen times and took a big whiff. I do believe Dave Pluegers statement that it could overpower some formula's.

i have authentic tonquin , pure quill the oldtimers call it .
and it most definetly can over power , it can even tame down skunk surprizingly .not completely , it mellows it out .
i would hazard to guess that in days long past , it was used by women as perfume.
i've got some authentic sperm whale oil , anyone else ?
as far as who makes good art. tonquin , the best i've ran across i got from blackie but i don't think its synthetic , i think its tinctured from the real thing .and at $12.50 an oz. , affordable.
he has the best asafoetida i've found as well.made from pure gum.

I took a sniff of a bottle of imitation tonqun that came from Stirling Fur...
...it's listed at 4.00/oz so I assume this would be a tincture...?
The smell was similar to talcum powder...
...how does this compare to the odor of the real thing or the high quality imitation musk that Mr. Dobbins offers?

I don't know of anyone who has any quantity of authentic tonquin musk. The two samples I have are just tiny amounts. The one sample I have was supposedly acquired in the 50s. I don't know how old the sample is that Asa gave to me.
I'm suspicious when I see tonquin for sale that's 25% authentic, 50% authentic, etc.

tony , no one said they had lots of tonquin but i've got enough of real tonquin i doubt you could afford to buy it !
and no its not for sale .
whatever blackies tonquin is, synthectic, art.or tinctured , its the closest i've found to the real deal.
the original owner of the tonquin i have died 40 years ago ,the same person had sperm whale oil, seal oil, and some other rare ingredients.
oh by the way i do have nelsons lure formulas and they do work and catch fur ! are they the originals ? who cares !
