They come in the 2.5 lb bag with the 1lb of salt included with it..

I think they are $3-5 a bag.

It was either $3.00 or $4.00 for a bag. The farmers market across the road from me, had them I think in 5 pound bags.

Took a look at a house today on one of the Real Estate websites . It was up in Palmer, I think. Anyways, they had what looked like logs pounded straight into the ground for structural supports instead of concrete block walls..


Will that pass the Building Codes up there ???

I once bought a truck from a guy in Anchorage. A year later I got a nasty-gram in the mail from the MOA about an expired emissions certification and threatening me with some fine or something...I never even got halfway thru the letter before it accidentally fell in the round file..

Building codes are not enforced in the Mat Su valley outside of Palmer and Wasilla. The borough wants you to get a permit, but there is no code review. Commercial stuff is different, that has to go thru the State Fire Marshal.

Come to think of it, Wednesday nite we had a 5.0 earthquake centered 6 miles from my place...believe it or not, my house is still standing...and it never even got a code reviewers stamp of approval!!!

Can you feel my disdain for plan reviewers and code compliance officers? IT IS A FEE (assessed value taxation) COLLECTION SCAM!!!

I've actually heard the same thing about the Valley. One of the reasons when the housing market took a tank the Valley took in on the chin. Lots of crappy "quick build" houses put up in the urgency to capitalize on the boom of the market. Rumor was, a lot of builders didn't even have their commercial license for such builds, and is now coming back to put lots out of business as they are stuck with the homes and can't sell them because they are POSs.

I built a museum here in 2004 for the U of A. Of course it was all architect designed and fire marshal approved. I recieved the final approval and notice to proceed 4 days before the grand opening. I had submitted the plans in May, and we got the approval December 4th. All the while the state is asking the architect for more information and he is charging my project. There are some reasonable public safety issues that they cover but mostly it's a scam to raise revenue.

As far as codes are concerned I am very much in favor of most of them. Many people don't realize they are minimum requirements and a good investment if you are building or buying. Especially electrical codes.

Canvas; I don't know what concrete is in NY but here it's getting close to $600 per yard delivered. Then you still have to place it where you want it. I would guess in the Palmer area it must be 125-150 per yard at least.

We have very unstable soils here in many locations so there are different ways of approaching a foundation depending on soils.

a few times it took 6 months after the building was done before the approval from DEC for the well and septic was approved...

I have not priced cement by the yard lately, but I do know that I get 40 lb bags of Morter Cement delivered for $4.99 a bag. That is just for the Cement. Delivery is FREE!! I usually give the driver a $10 tip for bringing it into the basement for me

Last I heard, cement was going for around $90.00 a yard around here. That was 7 or 8 years ago when I priced it out.

I agree with the Electric codes. Too many things can and do go wrong if things are not done right. When I bought this house years ago, it was wired up with 2 30 amp fuse boxes. Things were going off all the time! I then had the whole house rewired with 2 100 Amp Circuit Breaker boxes. What mess that old electric wireing was!! A mix of corrigated metal wire, little bit of new wire, some Aluminum wire and then there was A LOT of old cloth covered wire. When that was put in, I have'nt a clue. I do know that at one point (right before we had the wiring done,) a wall mounted lamp in one of the bedrooms that was probably installed sometime back in the 1920's , started to pop and sizzle inside the wall when it was turned on and off. I never seen an electrician run to a house so fast to replace a lamp and run new wiring and put in a light switch !!

What happened to the good ol days when you could substitute a penny for a fuse....

I don't like the way they have changed things here!! Some of the things I agree with and fully understand. But, there are some things , like requiring a building permit for a fence ( which NYS code not require) that I feel is just a grab for money. I laughed at a Board Meeting one time when they voted in a "Temporary" 1 year special fee for the clorination system at the Town's water well. I knew right away that once they said yes to it, that 1 year fee would become permanent . One year later, I was right !!

People can say what they want, but it really was a thankless job. The job really burns people out and it is no wonder why so many don't want to step up to the plate and do that type of work. But, I learned a lot!!

And waste a perfectly good Penny??

H a ha , thats kinda funny. Long time ago I shared rent on a rural house with a couple co-workers. Fuse blew and Bill put a penny behind it for a temp. fix. 2 days later we all came back to a smoking pile of ashes.

The project I'm currently involved in is remodeling the local Catholic church. It was built in 1958 and the original structure is 3 sided logs. It was gutted by fire 4 years ago because of Christmas lights on old cloth covered wire.

What the heck!
