I'm sure there are lingering odors there that cause them to continue to use those historic places even though it may not be evident to us.

Last season, while pre-season scouting & digging trap beds, I came to one of my farms and found a big, bare spot on the end of green field. Maybe round bales were stored here, then removed.

I picked up a tile spade full + of Red Fox & Coyote droppings at this bare spot.
The droppings were left in or near the center of bare spot-

Partner & I made 4 sets here. He made 2 sets on upwind edge, I set directly in center and 1 set on downwind edge.
We caught several Reds here, no Coyotes-

This was not my traditional location to set. But the bare spot caught my eye and droppings confirmed bare spot caught Canines eye. Maybe Canines were catching Mice what was stored here. Don't overlook some thing that has happened different or changes on your properties.

Great add Hern!! We have several areas where bails of pine straw are sitting waiting to be picked up…been there for several months now. I’ll definitely be checking those areas after they pull them.

Many Moons ago I was on a sandy spot in a well road on my hands and knees looking at how K9s step around a turd like nose a foot from the poop..
Somebody popped out of the brush right beside us.
I picked up the turd, put it in my coat pocket and jumped on my wheeler and never said a word to the guy...

I still ponder what going on in his head. Or what type stories he's telling..

I have used droppings from other species brought into an area to stimulate a coyotes interest.
Years ago, I had access to droppings from wolves, cougar and jaguar. . .even Bengal tiger from a man who had a small zoo.
I would take these out on the line and make mock toilet areas, which coyotes visited quite often.
Huskies droppings from meat fed diets were used as well.

A lot can be done with a little imagination.

* Craig and Dana used to sell Cougar droppings at one time.

This rock is about 8 ft in diameter and as you can see it is well used. The problem is that is located on the side of a public road but that landowner doesn't allow trapping. What would you do to attract the cats to the opposite side of the 35 ft road. I tried making trails and using trailing scent. But all i caught was coons. I don't want to attract the attention of anyone passing by.

I would say it isn't cats using that rock. Anyways I have never seen cats crap on a rock like that, they will generally go in the gravel road where they can scratch first. Although under a tree with a bunch of dead needles to scratch in seems to be their first choice.
