We have a 1750 sf cabin in northern Pa with propane for backup heat. We have no electric and the wives want electric. We are looking for suggestions .We figure we need about 5000kw,but there are so many out there. I figure some of you folks probably have the best knowledge ion this. We want to use lp for the fuel source. Thanks for any info. Gary

I had a remote hunting camp in N.MN for 30 years. We had gas lights and a generator.Ours was 2800W. It ran lights, a pump, a toaster and most tools, not all at the same time though!! I built a steel cabinet for it and lined it with sound deadener material, We would leave the door open for the hear to clear, I ran a piece of flex conduit from the exhaust to a 5 gal pail that was buried in the ground, really quieted it down. we ran the hack out if it for all those years and never had any trouble. A propane one would be even better and safer. Make sure you drive a ground rod at the generator and hook up the ground, My steel cabinet was lockable and anchored to the ground and was almost theft proof, at least we never had any trouble

The one I had at the camp was a Coleman with a Kowasaki engine in it. We used Mobil One in it and changed oil once a year. It is still running good. In November it would run 10 hours every day of deer season. October it was maybe 5-6 hours for 20 days. The rest of the year it ran quite a bit Sept was a high use month and My brother used it snowmobiling a lot during the winter. This was for 30 years. For me the propane was not an option we were just too remote and gas was easier to carry, with good road access propane would be nice and a lot safer.Honda is a great machine, they cost more, but are very reliable. I have a 5000w unit here for emergency use it is a Cummins from one of those tool shows only $300.00. If we do have an extended power outage it will do everything I need ,freezers and furnace if needed.

If you get an electric start, make sure to take the battery home and keep it on a charger.
Most generaters can be converted to propane.
My 3580 watt run/5500watt start rate will keep 2 freeezers, the frig, TV and vcr, plus the attic fan going fine. Got 16 hours run on 5 gals of gas. Ran for a 10 day power out in '06.
