I bought some glycol at the convention last week and when I opened it today I noticed it smells like glue. I have never noticed this before, is this normal?

i usually don't sniff chemicals lol

Food grade is the best grade, but getting it is tough...

I bet if you take a small amount out of the jug, and let it set for a while the smell will go away....

there is something wrong with the glycol being sold by trap suppliers these days,it used to be darn near odorless, now it has a chemical odor to it, it also used to keep quite well, now it get stronger smelling every year its kept over, i always considerd it a top notch trap bed antifreeze, urine antifreeze, bait antifreeze, and cam lock antifreeze,i always bought from a top supplier and was assured over the phone it was odorless and pure, id sure like to hear them explain this strange new glycol.

Did you buy Propylene Glycol or Eythylene Glycol???
There is a huge difference!

To start with Eythylene Glycol is an extremly deadly poison, and results in terrably painful deaths. It has no place in a trapper's Possible Box!

Some farm supply dealers (and others) don't know the difference, or do and hope that you don't. "Hey, it's glycol that's all I know. They do the same thing".

While both products are considered odorless, Eythylene Glycol has a alightly discernable odor to me. Furthermore, some manufacturers have begun to add a little odor to Eythylene Glycol, so as to avoid "accidents".

About 5 or 4 years back we had two such accidents down this a-way. A woman killed her husband, and then a couple of years later her friend-boy with Eythylene Glycol.
You got to read labels, and if the label doesn't say anything but Glycol, buy somewhere else.

I have never detected an odor in any propylene glycol i've ever purchased from MTP. Ace

This is proylene glycol purchased from RK Trapline Products at the PTA Convention. I should have checked it since I was getting it for $8/quart.

$8 a quart sounds about right. A gallon probably ave. $25 or so among dealers, give or take a buck or so.

every gallon i have purchased since 1997 is from minn. trapline products, i have some in the basement right now that i marked as odorous when it arrived this last fall, 2 years ago i dumped 4 gallons that was 3 years old that stunk so bad that i could smell it at the set by picking up the dirt and sniffing it 2 days after the set was made, there is something wrong with the glycol we are being sold, if its the best they can do i wish they would just say so as then a person could go to something else, i guess next ill try glycerine.

Possum: For just a tiny bit more money glycerine is one's best bet anyway to be sure. Both do the same thing and glycerine is thicker and guaranteed odorless. Ace

There are different grades of proplylene glycol. I have had some over the years go bad I had bought out a supplier and I had to throw it away.It appeared to be old stock in steel buckets.

Some do buy a cheaper grade and it is more prone to sour then the better USDA grade of Glycol if not used up quickly.I have never had a drum come in bad. But I have smelled what would be deemed sour smelling glycol.

I just ordered some and I think it's sitting on my doorstep right now. I'll check it when I get home. The last batch I got from Snareshop. It is fine and oderless. I still have a small amount left, but wanted more before I ran out.

Asa, What would the mix be for a liquid lure? I am making a lure with fish oil mixed with a lure I purchased. I want the lure to be freeze proof. How much glycerine to a gallon of fish oil to keep it from gelling up?

You can get Proplylene Glycol at Farm and Fleet in the ag section by the gallon for $18.00. Its used for treating dairy cows for a certain ailment. I'm sure this is high quality stuff.

I've never worked with fish oil to any extent. I'm not even sure that glycerine would stop jelling of fish oil. Some species fish oils jell real thick and some species hardly at all so that would make a difference too. Generally speaking, one pint of glycerine per gallon of urines and lures for example will keep it from freezing so if it will work at all in the fish oil a pint would probably do it. Ace
