Supposed to put 22 gallons in a 100# tank, tho you CAN fit more, that is the correct amount. Just as you're supposed to put 4 gallons in a BBQ tank. wink

I think the most I've ever pumped into a 100#er is 26gallons... it also depends on the time of year. I can get more in them in the winter... strange, but true.

When I went to the lake on Mon gas was still 4.10 and propane 4.50. Since the spring snow machine season started last week it will probably jump up now.

Bob, wish I could send all the planes I have been seeing your way. With all the fresh snow they have been chasing the last few wolves left on the line. There was 3 circling the line today trying for those last four left.

$5.65 per gallon gasoline and just about 220 for a 100# bottle.

I was told 22 by the Suburban Propane guy... I've only pumped a few 1000 gallons here at the store wink

And now I have to giggle... will 23.5 gallons blow up less than 26 gallons?? LMAO!!

that sound right cause a 40 pounder is 9.5 gallons.....yes fill at -5 and bring inside and you will have issues!! last thing i do every night at work is make sure NONE of my employees left propane bottles on trucks pulled into shop!! It expands quit well with a 70 -80 degree temp change!

just fill it till it blows liquid from the purge valve...been doing it that way for 18 years..never had one blow up yet

Exactly!

10 years of pumping that stuff was enough!

This topic confirms that the OPD(overfill protection device) was justified to be mandatory. It has a float that shuts off the valve so you can't overfill them anymore. 100# bottles take 22.5 and 20# take 4.5. You can put more in them at cooler temperatures but if you bring them in to warmer temps they expand and blow off the extra propane creating a bomb basically. Thousands of people have been killed from that exactly. Thats why you have to take a class now to pump it and tanks have to have an OPD valve in them. Also you can't carry it inside a vehicle for the same reason. If you put 26 gallons in someones 100# tank you were basically making a potential bomb and endangering peoples lives. As a propane distributor it is state law you or anyone that works for you filling bottles is required to take the class so you don't kill someone by doing that!

Bonnie...its a pressure vessel...more volume crammed in the bottle, the higher the pressure, especially if the temperature goes up.

Not to be too anal about it, but if you put 26 gallons at -10 F in someones tank and they take it home and put it in their garage or basement, gas expands, pressure goes up and boom. Not hard to make happen..

Bonnie, you should not have been filling peoples tanks without that knowledge, not knocking you, just pointing out the reality of it.

BTW, I believe you can still overfill them bu filling them while they're laying down. Our local guy will only fill them laying down if they are 100% empty so he knows he wont overfill.

Oops, just saw aktraprs post, and agree with him 100$. A friend of mine up near lake louise lost his cabin one winter when they had a freak warm spell, overfilled 100# ers and a combustible construction type (logs)...

I guess that's something the propane people failed to tell us when they gave us (minimal) instruction!

Do you think you'd be perspiring if you were hypothermic?

canvasback ... you're a wanna be alaska knuckle head. You are the perfect example of the guy who needs to s..., but won't get off the pot.

How much is property? How much would it cost to build this or that. How cold does it get?

Just move up here and find out. I have a feeling you're asking all these same questions to other busy people in Australia and Hawaii.

Nothing personal but you're one of a thousand with the same questions.
