What is a better general purpose urine for making scent posts, urine posts, and just on dirt holes and flat sets...fox, coyote, bobcat? Target species is canines and bobcat.

Any of those three urine species will work equally well from my experiences. Ace

All 3 urines will catch each target and non-target. Just make sure it is good quality and you will be fine.

I use coyote urine for both fox and coyote (because thats what I have the most of).....if I had more fox I'd use that....:) I will mix it up every now and then when I feel another trapper has past through and I know what urine he would have used.

Ivan: Good clean well strained urines will last for years. Store them in glass containers in a cool dark place between seasons. Urines stored in plastic will lose their zip as plastic is porous and the amonia content of the urine will gradually escape. Light breaks down and deteriorates lures and urines. Ace

Ivan - "Can i also store baits and lures for some period of time (6-12 months)"

You can keep baits and lures almost indefinitely if you store them out of sunlight in a cool dark place.

Yes Ivan, you sure can. That will preserve its freshness better than anything else.

I take it you're not married and don't have to share a freezer with a spouse - lol?

Thanks Paul, I have done this for years and never frozen it before. I have always keep mine in a cool dark area. I am married, but I have my own freezer. LOL. It stinks too! All three of them.

this is only what i was taught (told) ... fox urine will bring the best results due to the pecking order .... red fox being at the bottom due to being the most timid .... so i have stuck with that and it seems to work .... reds are wussys .... as far as urine ... ive never done it myself but the freezing of urine and skimmin the top was supposedly the most pure ....... im such an idiot !!

Gary I agree with you on the red fox urine, that is all I use for the most part and have had good luck with it on all K9's and feline too.

But during breading season on cats I will use good cat urine mixed with some good gland lure.

Gary I have never been much of a water trapper so I wouldn't know about mink, but I do love to get after the cats when it pays too, I've always been more of a dry ground trapper, although when I was in high school I did some rat trapping but I used all conis on them.

I agree, the only urine I have on my line is fox, even though a fox is rarely found in these parts.

Okay, not to pick on anyone here.....but I see no sence in only using urine from the weakest, non-threating Predator.

To me that is saying (implying) that a fox won't go anywhere near coyote pee......which we ALL know is not true.
Fox check out coyote pee, are not afraid of it and in conjunction with a good lure or bait would be a very valuable tool for catching the fox.

Coyotes mark their ground, and also mark where they have a possible food stash.....I believe a fox can tell how long ago a coyote was in the area and if its been a while it would be business as usuall (investigating different smells, looking for hidden food stash, etc....)
Its no different than a Raven waiting for a coyote to leave to clean up what is left.

One last thought.....if fox were afraid of coyote pee....there would be no, none, zero fox for about 3/4 of the country..they would all be in Maryland where they would be caught by the thousands by the Leggits, Browns, etc.

My point being...use what you want....I can see using the urine of the most common critter in the area.....but you don't need to limit yourself..or be afraid

Sounds good \:\)

Never did a true side by side test......

I just use coyote urine and catch fox on it also....and also use fox pee and catch yotes...lol

Andy......why do you think the fox urine out preformed the coyote urine?

1st thing to know......was it good collected urine from each Pred?....you know apple for apple? Same lure used just different pee? Same exact d-hole or urine post 5' away or 10' away? same trail? one up wind, one down wind? Both traps covered the same level? alot of guilding on one, not much on other? How many times was the test done? was it after a rain or close to a full moon?......:)

I am with everyone else here, I use red fox urine. I even use it on my cat set a lot. I have found it to work better for me.

Another test....

I put down a Burger king Hamberger on a plate.....I then put down a McDonalds hamberger on another plate, they both kinda look the same.

McDonalds was cooked and fresh
Burgerkings was not handled well by the person making it.... not cooked, 3 days old and the bun had mice poo on it.

If I was a human....I would choose the Mcdonalds burger to eat/smell, because the other burger is not attractive to me...

Same deal when talking about pee......How it is collected and handled is very important to the end user/smeller (the fox or yote)....if its junk (like coyote pee on one set) and good handled fox pee on another what would you go to?

Again, as I have said in the past "Use what you want" there is no right or wrong answer......
If all I had was fox pee, that is all I would use (to catch both), if all I had was yote pee, thats all I would use...I wouldn't go buy joe blows fox pee and think "Man, I'll be in the money now".....
I use urine that is from the most prevelant critter in the area....right or wrong? I also change up when I feel is needed....and to be honest, about 3/4 of my line has coyote pee and the other 1/4 fox pee....but, I see no difference in the catches.....both urines were collected by myself so urine I feel is of matching quality...(same food, colletion method, house keeping, etc.)
