I use a pair of Klein side cutters for cutting cable and opening s-hooks, and a pair of pliers for closing s-hooks.

Use the cable cutters, Goatchin. You'll go nuts trying to put frayed ends through cable sleeves if you do not. The cable cutters do a good clean job unless you try to cut wire with them.
A soft answer turneth away wrath.

Whellers, Got a web/site? Thanks, 45/70 They are sold at Menards. They don't sell through their web site. They look like C7's but Wheelers must have better luck with them than me, mine almost always cut all but 2-3 strands. lol I do use them now to cut #9 for supports they are great for that, but they never cut cable for me worth a crap. ~ADC~

Yep, I've bought several pairs of them, tighten the nuts too. Some of them cut a few hundred pieces before the quit cutting all the strands, most never did get a clean cut. But I still like them for wire. I never use them for wire though til they quit cutting cable. They snip right through #9 though very easy. As I lose them to the weeds of the Iowa ditches, I'll buy more, maybe I'll get lucky and get a pair of cutters like yours. Funny I never lose my $40 C7's though. LOL I'm still on my first pair of them after thousands of cuts and they still cut clean EVERY time.

This is my first upcoming season using cable (7X7 3/32) to make up my own cable stakes - always used rebar. I opted for the Felco C7 cutters to simplify my life. Now that I am older, I decided I can use and need all of the extra time that I can get just to set traps, instead of fussing around trying to come up with a more economical way of doing stuff as I use to do in the past. I need all of the shortcuts that I can get, as my time in the field is starting to shorten up with my chronology. And, that includes something as simple as cutting cable.

A cable cutters works best especially when releasing animals not in season or landowners working dog! Can you imagine carring a 3 # hammer and a chunk of RR iron and struggling to put iron behind cable on a bobcat and telling him to hold still as you swing that 3 # hammer over his head!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The ER person will be telling you hold still, just a few more stitches to go.... LOL .....
