I was reading in Bear Hunting Magazine that bears are very attracted to beaver and beaver castor. What would you do to make a bear lure that you could dip a rag in and soak it up?
A company has a new beart bait start up lure with castor and it has been getting great reviews from hunters. I was thinking grinding some up in vodka and making a tixtture?

Thanks

Tinctuing in vodka is the first thing that entered my mind . But bear are usually pretty leery about approach bait . A guide in Maine I know uses oily bait before the season. After the bear get it on them they leave a trail . After a while different bears start goming in . Good luck .

I make a vasiline based lure with castor and skunk essance, it pulls the bears into the area I hunt pretty good.

Hey thanks,

I have a bunch of castor and this is my first time making a lure. How much should I use for a jar of gasoline or fifth of vodka. I was thinking about adding something savory like a fish oil to the vasiline and maybe something sweet because a pal uses a sweet coon lure bear hunting.

Should I mix them all up?

How fine should I grind the castor?

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

I use a 18 oz jar of vasiline, melt it down, add 4 castors ground up in a blender, add it, and about a 1/8 of an oz of skunk essance. It has a skunky sweet beaver smell to it. Shot three blackies over it, and trapped a butt load of critters on it!
Keep stiring the vasiline after you add the stuff to it until it thickens, if you don't it will settle funny and won't be even.
I still have not come up with a sweet smelling mix that lingers with vasiline, I tried fish oil last year but it didn't smell as good once mixed. I wouldn't mix it all up.

try substituting honey or molasses in place of the vasiline, and don't use the gasoline!

Agood black bear lure which i have used with good success is 50 50 mix of beaver castor and oil from beaver oil stones ground up with mineral oil base and enough anis oil to sweeten the smell.Ababy food jar opened by stand will attract bear from quite a distance.

Not really sure why you'd want to make it liquidy, just put a couple of beaver preferably skinned and bloody up tree's. And then what ever for bait in the barrels or on the ground. You'll bring bears in. I personally think that the beavers body has enough smell of castor in it, so take the castors out and sell or re use somewhere else.

No need to haul around tons of bait.
