1 seems to work pretty good for me. Never thought about putting extras on my coon traps though. It wouldn't hurt anything.
One day I will figure this game out.

I have a swivel at the end of the chain, one in the mid-chain, and another swivel point (just the j hook) at the trap. Thats what I'm using this year, I figure it can't hurt and if when gets tangled in a bunch of junk this will help keep the animal comfortable.

One at the trap, one in-line and one at the stake. I would put more on if I thought they would help. Now for otter I would reccomend at least 23 for every six inches of chain.
It takes 43 muscles to frown, 17 to smile, but only 3 for a proper trigger squeeze.

Most of my coon traps are 1 1/2 coils baseplated and center swiveled with three swivels. Also have installed chew guards. I feel confident the coon will be there when I get there. Most of my coons are caught on dry land.

woofman, Chew guards are added almost like a double jaw but they don't touch when trap is closed. I made mine from 20 penny nails. Look in the archives of sullivans forum for pictures. When welding these in becareful to leave enough room for the pan and dog to operate.
