I am going to steal this question from LT Grey (great idea you had for coons, LT), but change the target animal.

What is your favorite skunk lure, not just brand but flavor also, for catching skunks at this time of year?

RAT, Use whatever you see fit from my post anytime! We all are an extended family here on the ADC frorum, for the most part, so we try to help each other out. I have used both Bob Jameson's and Carroll Black's ( Blackie's Blend) skunk lures with good success. I haven't tried On Target's skunk lures but I hear talk they are pretty good. I make a good number of baits and lures so I am always trying new stuff out. Wolf River has a new bait he's working on that seems promising. Grubenator, I think it's called.

Wolf River's Grubinator. ;\)
I've used both Bob Jameson's and Carroll Black's skunk lures with much success. All with marshmallows for eye appeal and often with a trailing scent.

While I can't answer for Bob, an easy and cheap bait hanger can be made from a piece of 14 gauge wire wrapped tightly around a pair of needle nosed pliers, that forms a cone shape. This is completed by forming the last few inches into a hook shape to hang in the back of a cage trap. This takes a pretty thick bait to stay in....or as I like to do, first stuff it with marshmallows and add the lure or bait on top. \:\)

This allows the bait to stay up in the breeze where it carries out further.....that's the idea anyway. ;\)

LT,

I guess I have a lot to learn about baits and lures.

I read pretty much everything in this forum, before it ever makes it to the archives, and that's the first time I ever saw a "wire spoon" mentioned.

Now that you explain it, I feel stupid for asking.

Krusty

Thanks LT. and Krusty never feel stupid for asking a ? how would any of us learn if no ? were asked?
I read about the spoon thing in wct and it streaches the bait.
putting bait on the underside of the treadle was tip given me by Don Leofler ( hope it's spelled right).

I have seen trappers dig a hole , place the bait in it and THEN set the cage trap on top of it.....so there is actually no bait inside of the cage trap...must work , although not the way I do it.

here the ants get most baits/lure if on the ground.
under the trap a piece of honey comb or larve from a yellow jacket nest work great too!

Ants will also climb cage traps to get to a bait...seen that one a few times too many! But I do get mine off the ground.

I am here! I was at the Kansas Furharvesters Convention over the weekend and then went and did some deer sitting. I say sitting 'cause I didn't see nothin'.

Oh, by the way. I had a blast at my first convention. I thought it was great when Bob Currie gave a demo on muskrat and mink trapping and there were some mink tracks. I sure did learn a lot. Do they ever do ADC demos at conventions? I would like to see one on fur grading.

(This is a old post)

I have tried a lot of of different lures and baits for skunks and have had little or no success with any of them, what I use the most is Wise butter popcorn, it will catch many times first night with the tube and in the springtime for babys with the large have-a-heart and putting 3 or 4 piles of popcorn in before the trigger and one small pile after the trigger I can catch a whole family at once and in the same trap, the first enters and eats at the first pile until he gets bumped in, he eats at the second pile and the bumper eats at the first pile, more and more skunks enter until one gets bumped across the trigger which locks them in. with skunks the have-a-hearts solid door gives a side to approach the trap without offending the skunks

Also to satisfy the professional aspect of customer relations I will explain how I taint the popcorn with Red-fish Powder for a lure, popcorn is the visual, red-fish powder is the lure.

Show me something that works as good Wise Popcorn for skunks and I will change!
I invest a hundred + every year on baits and lures, most are disapointing, with multi trap sets I will try the new lure/ bait first, if no catch I will bait one trap with somthing Proven to work. I plan to try the peaches n' cream soon and hope for the best.

I dont like using the popcorn, I use it because it works. and I dont catch CATS or Coons with it.

I just receved my peaches n' cream will try it today and hope for the best

Some will wait for what they want, But this is much more slicker, WORK REAL HARD for what you want, and you will get it much more QUICKER ...
