This is what I came up with to let the gases escape

It's the end of the air bubbler thing from a fish tank(couldn't spell what I wanted to say)

Neat idea! How about silicone or epoxy instead of duct tape for the other end?
Also, if you do like I've done, I buy mine in the ground to "age." You may need to add something to keep the critters from chewing on the tube, stone etc. I used PVC fittings, and cloth covers, and I've had a bit of chewing going on!

I didn't have any silicone to use but if the tape starts to peel I'll have to get some. The bucket is sitting on top of a drum. My dog can't get to it(wireless fence) but he will keep anyone else away.

You don't need the tube either. Just drill a hole small enough for the air stone shank to fit snug and glue in place.

what about if you run the tube into a small container of water so the gases can burp out but any impurities cannot get in. Thats what I used to do when I started brewing beer.

I thought of that but was worried about the water evaporating in the sun and then allowing bugs to crawl inside
