i tried the chisel method and can only do a couple cuts and it dull back on me again.

Rodent-do you have any problems withe cable catching or do you have it up to full speed b4 touching the cable?-dont want to catch and whip-could be bad

Is it a good chisel? Something that was made in America, Sweeden or Germany? A cheap cold chisel isn't worth owning. Also make sure that the edge isn't too fine. You want it to be a wide V not a knife edge.

Also make sure you are cutting down onto something softer for the anvil. I use a chunck of old railroad track just like Tex A. It is pretty soft and the chisel cuts into it without messing up the edge. I can cut about 50 cuts before I touch up the edge.

Hope this helps you out.

It's just my opinion but ... if you're gonna play the game having the right tools doesn't hurt!

Make the investment in a good pair and they will last you. I bought this pair some years back. Paid I think $55 for them ... couldn't do without them!!! \:\)

I have a pair just like possum skinner that work great.

I was in Tractor Supply the other day and they had some on the clearance rack for 3 dollars and picked up a pair..got home and they work perfect. Went back and got the other pair for that price.

Put the cable in a vice and just cut close to the vice jaws with the tool running WOT.

thats prolly my problem TLC-i know the chisal is good and i keep a "wide" edge on it-not knife edge. the anvil is an ancient one-that anvil has been around way b4 my great-grandfather-not hardly a dent or grove-very hard. we have some RR track laying around i'll try that.

thanks all

p.s.-my sister works at the TSC near us and she said that the store doesnt carry them. might be able to get her to special order some for me LOL

Give it a try....that RR metal is pretty soft, bet that hard anvil is what's causing the problem. Awesome for an anvil that has to take the pounding, but tough on the edges.

It was my understanding of the initial question that you were making up some pogos or snares etc. I do that in my shop before the season...not in the woods. I'm not saying to carry some RR track, hammer and chisel along with you....LOL. If you need a mobile tool by all means get one, but for me, I don't need one in the field.

I would think a chisel would flatten down the end ofthe cable and make it hard to get through the stop or ferrel. May work ok in the fur shed but if you snare any you need something to cut snares in the field. espec when they get wrapped up in a fence post or fence. Im like the other guys, I got to have my cable cutting pliars. Not saying the other way wont work. Glad you posted about only making pogos, cause I was wondering how you was going to use that anvil on your snare line. lol.

boys, there ain't no way salt can be bad for ya... if your eating it on buttered sweet corn...NO WAY
