Since canned milk seems to be the cheapest way to go for Milk in AK,, what is the ratio of water to canned milk per gallon of milk ? Never used the canned variety before .

Generally half and half, depending on how cheap you are or how long until you can get more cans...the further from the store, the less you milk you put in the mix.

Rumors of my assimilation have been greatly exaggerated.

So it would take more than one can to equal the milk you buy in the store ?

Yeah. If you went thin (from what I recall, been assimilated to city life) you might get 1 can to stretch to 3 or for cans of water...if you went thin.

another option is non fat milk powder, then add some cream to get the fat content up.they make shelf stable cream that comes in cartons like the little juice boxes.requires no refrigeration and has a long shelf life.

I don't know anyone who uses canned milk. Think about the weight and the freight cost CAnvasback.

I think $12 here for fresh milk, prices do suck here.... The other store sells 4.4 lb Box of Dry milk that makes 22 quarts. I am unsure of price but i do believe it is lower cost then the fresh stuff. Happy Thanksgiving Fellow Trappers.

White and I are not milk drinkers, thank goodness. I put powdered milk into a lot of our baked goods. I purchase 8 pound boxes (40 quarts) for $35 and receive them in the mail for about $4 postage = about a dollar a quart.
I have Trapr to thank for the cream in a box! That gets used for special occasions ;o)

We use the boxed milk here, it's three something a quart in the Native Store. It taste just like milk and can sit on the shelf until you open it. Having helped unload the plane many times i would say most people don't drink milk but they drink soda pop and energy drinks!

Jeff,

What are you selling those for in the village?

I loved the ones I got for the wife. I still am waiting for the plucked and sheared ones from them that I sent in.

Reason for the Canned Milk was that I ran out of the regular milk. Would have went to the store, but it was getting late with the Thanksgiving Dinner and I figured it would be a quick fix till I got to the store. Drink about a 1/2 gallon every day .
