I pass up 2-3 spots for every right of way spot i trap because of near by farms. Setting after new year keeps pheasant dogs from road hunters out of my sets as well.

Once the coon have moved to the cattails in the northern regions how do you guys trap them. I am assuming trail sets and bodygrips, but It did not work for me this fall. Any tips anyone willing to share.

Wish i could use 220s and buckets but their are too many hunting dogs here! 160 is all you need in buckets/cubbys. Just make sure the bucket or cubby is long enough to prevent reach ins.

The boxes look to be more effective and I will be trying a dozen or two next year, late-season inside barns. I still won't bother setting them until the creeks ice over.
They are. I had crap catches in my bucket sets compared to wood ones.

I am not a great coon trapper this is only my third year of trapping but i have learned alot... What do you guys do with the meat.. i create a big pile out in my woods and catch some coyotes on trails to it, but is there people who buy the meat? if so where? I have heard about selling skulls of coons and an old friend should me how to get a coon head into a white coon skull in a matter of days. so im going to try that... I just dont have alot of money and any thing i can use to get some extra cash while im having fun walking through the woods trapping i would be willing to try.... this can be done in about 10 hours total. boil it down in dawn and borax solution.... pressure wash it off... soak it in white gas for two to three hours... then go to the store and buy a box of hair frosting. rap it in seran wrap after your done, set it under a light and undo it the next morning and wash it off. let it air dry and it will be white as a ghost. i've done dozen of skulls this way all including bear which are a keck of alot greasier than an old coon.

For those of you who are talking about dog proofing. I use vertical wooden boxes between 24"-30" long. I use 220 for coon and I recess the trap back 7"-8" and I set the trap off the ground 6"-8" therefore dogs can't arch themselves into the box but coon and fisher can. Works great but make sure you secure your trap into the box. I have never had a problem. I hope this helps you guys who have dogs around. Try this with your dog without the trap obviously and you will see it works great.
J I have an idea of how you make this set, but post a pic anyways. Its god to see different ideas.

Why the white gas ? What does that do to it ? White gas is a very strong degreaser. and will help draw alot of the grease out of the skull that doesn't come out with boiling. it can be re-used numerous times. alot of taxidermists use it on their bird skins before mounting as well to get that extra bit of grease out before putting it all back together.
