It is a live trap.

I haven't used the Safeguard trap but I have used the Victor Tin Cat which appears to be the same trap, just a different manufacturer.

The most I have caught in one was six.

Actually it's an almost live trap. Every time I opened one of those up, there was this really fat mouse smiling at me and a lot of inedible mouse pieces scattered all over the rest of the tin box. I've never really known how many I've caught at one time. ( I suppose I could have added up all the feet and divided by four )

If you take a knife full of your favorite mouse bait and smear it right above where the trigger goes down, it sure doesn't hurt any.

Its a live trap but as Paul said they don't last long. Bait it once and put it against the wall. Once it is seasoned it won't need bait.
