I like to have my traps covered as well on these jobs. Cats seem to like the security of an enclosed trap and catches are somewhat hidden.

This might help those of you that have trouble catching cats as I did. I put a Comstock in the same culvert that the cats were going in, but were refusing my one door cage. When I switched it out with the 2-door Comstock I got two in the last two days. I didn't cover the bottom wire but I did put cat food on either side of the trigger wires.

Paul, I find that the double door traps do up the catch rates. I use Kirk Dekalb's traps but see no reason Jim's wouldn't work just as well. Also positive sets are the very first thing I look for when setting up a cat job.

Did you try calling the city animal control , if you get caught kill these cats you could end up on the front page of the news paper , hand cuffs jail probation , these cats have rights , I would get cleared by your local animal control , also could call the human soc and take the cats to them . If the lady keeps feeding them soon there will be a cat in every crack , it's a rabbie factory now . Health risk . Being wild cats they could be very trap shy . So using a funnel trap as Paul said could be the only way . Get some plywood and cover the holes leaving only a few holes to place your traps , this would be the only way to get them all , rats will also move in eating the cat crap and the food this lady is putting out , using the same type food is also a good idea . Tuna fish will draw flys where dry cat food won't , if you call the city don't say there walking on your truck, talk about all the health risk that are breeding over there , which is true

Electronic bait works realy well on cats and skunks where real bait gets ate up by flies. A little oil for lure, and some visual with a chirping box, and the cars cant resist it. I always drop my cats at the humane society. I dont get charged at all.

Mr. Flick, you live in Wisconsin, for crying out loud. If a cat is obviously unadoptable, why would you take it to a humane society? Take a look at the expression of the gal behind the counter when you bring that fleabag in; can't you take a hint?

Sure Paul, I can take a hint. But its there job to decide if domestic animals get put down in my opinion. Thats just how I roll, Im not judging how anyone else disposes of cats.

The gal(s) behind the counter where I take ferals have expressions toward me that I would say are positive. However, the volunteers doing the actual handling of the cats, well that is sad.

My gals are extremely NOT trapper friendly, and they know I am a trapper. Each feral cat I capture has a documented history of it's capture and handling by me according to the standard definition of "humane" treatment." Regardless of what you think of this, it works for me. Keep in mind that donations to the SPCA, and income to your business, are not bad things. I bundle a $25 per cat into a feral job that goes to the SPCA. When you get to know the folks there, think about a box of donuts

Paul, I totally understand the expressions/feelings of those workers. To date, none of us, from either side, has an answer to the feral cat problem.

The gals behind our counters are high school volunteers that will gladly sell you an old tom cat for $79. The same tom cat that will then proceed to drag a dead whooping crane underneath the kitchen table.

Seriously..get all the straight dope from your local AC before you do anything! [The place sinners go to when they die] hath no fury like that of an AR activist who's caught a trapper breaking the law (not that you would anyway, but from what I'm seeing on this thread..wow!)

Dave, you have to remember that Mr. Flick, Nate, and I are from a state that came very close to having feral cats listed as an unprotected animal. ( This means you can take as many as you want, whenever you want, and do whatever you see fit )

IP, I remember back as a kid in Indiana in the early '70s FC Taylor had house cat listed on their fur price sheet.

I think I made it pretty clear that I dont care what anyone does with there cats. Eat them for all I care. I just prefer to drop them off to the animal shelter, or humane society. I hope thats alright with you Paul. I hope everyone else make up there own mind as to how they do certain business also. Advice is welcome from anyone, but arm twisting is differant. There isnt any need for it.

Mike, perhaps I was misunderstood. Apparently the rules regarding any kind of cats in most states is a whole lot stricter than what I am used to. I have never criticized anyone for their methods of handling animals and I never will. That post was meant as informative, not argumentative.

Yikes, this sounds like more politics amuck. The SPCA here puts ferals down within 24 hours. There is NO effin adopting of them. He should have used a 22. And for God sakes, never, ever smile. eek

Feral cats and particularly feral cat colony's really bother me. I was on our local humane society board for years and was able to keep us focused on animal welfare not rights. Finally some humaniacs got on the board and started supporting tnr's by all kinds of names. I told them that I like them held life sacred and I was coming down on the side of wildlife and could no longer be on the board. The feral cat is a serial killer and if tnr was the answer we should have done it to Ted Bundy. Instead of wasting all of that education. The cat is not wanting to have sex with it's victims so nuetering doesn't stop the carnage. Enough of my soap boxing. back to solving the problem at hand.
Robb is right know "your"law. Some jurisdictions have passed laws and ordinances making it a serious offense to treat a cat inhumanely and that is in the eye of the beholder.
In cage traps I cut a piece of card board to fit the floor then cut it across half way thru so that it bends at the trip pan and extends past it. A lot of cats step over the trip pan or stretch out over it. I think they just don't want to step on the different surface. The extension extends the trip pan so that it can't be avoided and you can semi hide the food under it. An instinctive behavior the cat understands.
WCS sells Alley cat that is attractive lure for the finicky cat.
The crossbow is discreet. You have be sure it is acceptable because the cat even with a good shot might go a few yards. A bad shot he may end up on the front page, CNN or worse. A dead cat is not worth much an injured cat isn't either but it could run up 10,000 dollar vet. bill and be the poster child for new laws and or fund raisor for years.
The best option is take them to a humane society if you have that option and like Phil said never smile. The cat might smile while killing but we are above that.
One other thing I am just starting to think about u tube facebook etc. I think we all should start making movies of cats killing and eating around bird feeders, walking on cars, pooping in the mulch, or just the poop sticking out, spraying peoples property and posting them on those sites.

I did a dead cat under the porch job the other day . The neighbors bitbull had killed her cat . The county animal and human soc were both called and said they couldn't help . The lady didn't understand why the human soc wouldn't atleast take a look seeing she sends them money . I thought that was funny inside just said oh really i thought they help animals ,I just hope next time that bitbull gets loose it doesn't take down some little kid . Sad to say that's what it takes to get the county involed sometimes, it's also a good reason to carry your pistol when out and about . The county here will no longer take cats and has cut there hours due to budget cuts .

From everything I have heard those two traps are great and they would eliminate a lot of problems from cage trapping. My post was for people having to operate with outdated stuff and helping them do their best. I would like to challenge you Mr. Winkelmann to stop running your trap and buy me the trap!

This is a very busy time of the year, Paul, but you've got my mind working on maybe getting some of these new traps into people's hands, maybe in fall when things start dying down a bit. Some kind of contest would be a good idea. Maybe limit the contestants to guys who don't already own one. ( Like you )

Hey Pesky, you really don't need a Comstock or DeKalb, or any other brand of cage for a dead cat. For whatever the reason, they just don't seem to be able to set it off.
