On another thread Paul Winkelmann said something about South Dakota being a tough state to make a living as a WCO. Which made me wonder, which state (or states) make it espeacially tough on someone trying to make a living doing what we do. I'll start out by saying, I live and work in California and if your state has more regs. and rules than I have to put up with ......man, all I can say is good luck!

Bob, I'm reasonably sure that you win the rules and regulations award. But at least after paying your pound of flesh to the different governments, you do have a bunch of customers that are more than happy to pay you to take care of their problem.

South Dakota has two problems: the majority of their non-city folk know how to pull a trigger themselves, and secondly, the ones that are overwhelmed have state trappers. Now all of this will eventually change. ( Knowing wildlife, I think California might do some changes as well ) I just don't think a young man has time to wait for this to happen. I moved into a better paying area because I felt that I was meant for this business. Anyone who feels strong enough about it, can do the same.

Paul, I agree with you fully about feeling "meant" for this business. After almost 19 years I still feel like a "kid at Christmas" every morning I go to work. You're also right about my state regs. changing, just not for the better for the private wco. There is a bill right now that, if passed, will just about make it impossable to do wco work for profit.

Some people in the animal biz are wanting to be the only one in the area for some reason instead of advertising harder. They will call there competition un-professional, and trash talk them. Some even pretend to be asking for more regulation (Like a contract isn't binding)
I see them on videos and news paper articals talking like this and I see right through the BS. Anyone who thinks they are better than all the rest should be teaching the competition if they give a crap about the industry at all.
Just my opinion I guess, but how many are in the same mind set?

Competition is welcome, helps spread the word. They must fight any way they can, but I win enough times to keep me in beans and beer. One learns a few tricks along the way.
