Researchers are asking for the public's help in finding out about a coyote struck and killed on Lapeer Road near The Palace of Auburn Hills Monday.

Holly Hadac of Oxford Township — who is taking part in a coyote population study — said a person saw the coyote in the road midday Monday, took a photograph of the dead animal and sent the photo to Hadac.

The photographer then drove a short distance away. When she looked back, a man in a white Kia was near the coyote.

A few moments later, the Kia was gone and so was the coyote.

Hadac is anxious to talk with the driver to find out if the coyote was a female.

"We have radio-collared a male and we believe if this (dead) coyote is a female, this is our male's mate," said Hadac.

The information about the dead coyote will help the researchers in their study of coyotes, including the collared male they call Lance.

Hadac is volunteering with Southeastern Michigan Coyote Research Project, the doctoral project created by Bill Dodge, a Wayne State University Ph.D. student involved with wildlife biology.

Dodge, who began the research in 2009, is studying coyotes in urban settings, trying to learn how they survive.

Eight coyotes in Southeast Michigan have been trapped and fitted with radio collars, said Hadac. Continued...

Coyote will eat anything yes even deer poop if need be and live like a king on it . Turkey poop they really like . Apple trees are always eaten from . Plus deer rodents garbage fox dogs cats people you name it they eat it . I had know idea they where doing this . Seems like they would have told us guys controlling coyote . No respected I tell ya . Yup I'm a trapper just kick me in the teeth to climb your pole . Who controls coyote pop out of control trappers . I guess it's ok for me to tag my release Animals and do my own study .

They want to study coyotes to see how they survive around people?

This reminds me of something they did here in North Carolina some years back. They put together an expert panel to do a 6 month study and gave them a 7 digit budget to find out why,.... Are you ready for this? ...To find out why hog farms stink! crazy

Hey! Give me the million and I can tell you in 6 seconds!

A privately funded group did a coyote study in R.I.a few years ago under the watch of the state and the coyotes were trapped by spencer tripp from massachusetts.I rode along with spencer to check it out. Alot of good came out of this study. For one they were able to prove to the public that coyotes werent as plentiful in the area as everyone thought! The coyotes were tracked traveling over a very long range every night,so the coyote that was spotted at point A at 9:00 was the same coyote that was spotted at 12:00 at point X.The other thing that was really in our favor was that all the coyotes were caught with footholds and released unharmed. We have footage and there was a vet on site to examine them! This info has been used at the state house by us against the antis! There was alot of good info in this study, all things that we know already but the general public has no idea. And sometimes they will believe a scientist before they believe a trapper.

What? These people can't read? Nobody will probably ever do a more in-depth urban coyote study than Rob Erickson did in the Chicago area.
