What Dave asked. It sounds like you may have done a good exclusion but did not vent them very well. If that is the case it is probably nearly over. You might reinstall a vent. I think we need to know when you did the exclusion to say more.

Pesky, how long after your meals do you stop making droppings and do we all stop at the same speed?

You can have filtration of guano for years after the bats are gone. Particularly in a ridge vent that is prone to have wind flow from the outside blowing some down below.Mice, birds or squirrels running about the ridge area also can cause some disturbance to the site area and cause material to release and drop. I have seen this many times over the years. Folks call and think they have bats again just turns out to be filtration guano from time to time.

You probably need to do a watch one nite and bats and trapped some inside. You can get some refusals from time to time with any colony eviction particularly from the juveniles that wont accept the device or system you have used. Most small brown bats wont usually last more then a few days under stress of flight inside structure without adequate food and water. You will find them scattered through out the school if other areas are flight accessable via the interior ceiling or open space access for several days until its all said and done.

Sounds like a plan to me check droppings for freshness and do a stake out . Could be a missed spot right over the droppings even not a hole that stays open it could be a flap door of metal .

I think he means they (the bats) are dropping dead on the floor from the roof of the gym. That's how I take it, anyway.

I don't think he means there are bat droppings on the floor.

Just livin' the dream...and paying full price for it!

Chris you're right that changes everything! I think the exclusion is probably good but he has trapped some inside and it is probably about over.

Just to provide a difference in opinion...

There is more risk in dying bats dropping in a school...than healthy bats dropping poo in a school. The risk is kids or pets getting bit by a groggy bat. I would open it up and let them out with a few more excluders.

Ok guys I have a few minutes and to get you up to speed- I pulled the excluders about a week ago and now I just took a phone call from the Superintendent other day saying that they found 2 dead bats on the gym floor (sounds like adults) and bat guano is still falling out from behind the score board (new or old I don’t know). One side note to this thing is that the school is on its way out and the staff is no longer going in on a daily bases and I have not been able to get assess in to the school senses I started this job. When I first started this job I did see the guano at the score board and found one heavily used in and out hole at the corner of the gym. I know I need to get back inside and see first hand what is going on.
Sorry no pics to show now but may add some later.

Brad,

I know most folks go for the obvious on this, that you must have sealed some in during the exclusion and that could be the case.

However,

This time of year I have more dead bats outside larger roosts that have not had any sealing or work done. Whether it is disease,
dehydration or other natural causes, there are many full grown dead bats right now outside my roosts in my state than I've had
outside of pup rearing season.

I would agree with folks, wouldn't hurt to open the holes you sealed, replace the valves and see what happens, but I'll throw another
possibility in too.

Last week we got involved in a local issue where a whole colony of Mexican free-tailed bats took a wrong turn and rather than exiting
the exterior walls they entered and ended up all over above a drop ceiling and fell into many many wall voids and crevices, unable to
escape. I removed 45+ live bats and 35+ dead ones and they are still finding a bat or two each day crawling out of some random
crevice.

I think everyone on here would agree that bats can get into the most ridiculous places and that most of the time "cut and dry" is not
truly the situation.

I would agree with Dave K that better to have the guano than the actual bat as kids of all ages are likely to interact with the critter versus
the droppings.

Bob J. made a great statement about the guano too and how a long time after this can be dislodged and enter the spaces, good for
anyone just starting out to remember, I've had my own growing pains not being long into this and learning from every bat job. Every
colony I see is in a different type of structure and different bat species compound the differences in what we see on the job.

I would expect some bats to "balk" at the excluder devices occasionally as well and if they turn and enter living space or in this case
school space somewhere, they might not find their way back out.

I just removed 120 dead bats from within a cabin that was unused for 3 years. Pups aside, there were a ton of adults that for whatever
reason entered rooms and didn't find their way back out again. This says to me that some of this is just going to happen, but by doing
your best to assure the cones or tubes are up the longest period possible, assures more will leave. Of course another possibility is that
some of the entry points were not identified as primary and sealed, and that those bats were cut off from the exit tubes.

Anyway, think everyone provided some good info, update as you can, interested to know what you find.

Justin
