I have heard of rats coming up toilets. I know if you are on a septic tank a grey rat snake can make it up your toilet. I had a call for a removal on this once. Bet this would speed things up quite a bit.

Yes,rats will come up through a toilet and go back down the same way. I've personally seen it happen twice. Keep the lid down. smile

I have heard of that, and there is a valve you can add under the toilet to solve the problem. Not sure who makes it though.

Nope.LOL At one location I saw one run into the bathroom. I thought I had it cornered, and then it jumped into the stool. At the second location,I saw where a rat had been coming up into the stool (lid closed) and chewing on edge of the plastic seat. Both were mechanically eliminated, shortly thereafter. grin

Used to be some sort of "rat-proof valve" you could put in the bottom of the bowl that was purported to keep rats from being able to come up thru the trap. It was available at PCO suppliers. Never had the need for one (or the interest in installing it). Seem to me it would, um ...clog up.
Older city sewer systems have just one set of pipes to serve for both storm and sanitary drainage, and they are somewhat more susceptible to rats entering houses that way.

I know that snakes do.

One house I was called to three different times for snakes. Always in the bathroom. After investigating I came up empty. There was no sign of snakes under the house, no evidence of where they may have come in around doors or windows, all of which shut tight, no space between flooring and heating and air vents, nothing! That is, until the third call when I actually caught the little slithering varmint coming out of the toilet.

Then my mind started thinking like a plumber again and I went to the roof to investigate the vent pipes. I found a recent shed in a tangle of limbs and leaves collected on the roof near the sewer vent and surmised that they had climbed the pecan tree, slithered out on an overhanging limb and dropped to the roof, then right down the vent.

I screened it off and, voila! No more calls.

There are all kinds of creatures that come up toilets. Anything that's in the sewers and is small enough to make it through the pipes, can end up making the short swim through the toilet. This goes for drains too.

Be careful about screening stack pipes; could be against code.
