Hi folks,
I have a friend who lives on a farm - says his yard is full of garder snakes. Is there a quick and easy way to rid them?

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks

You mean garter snakes? At the risk of sounding snotty - why would any farmer ever want to bother non-venomous snakes on his farm? Crimeny, they do so much good! Maybe every once in a while, one might get a hen's egg. Other than that, they are tremendously beneficial critters.

Are they Thamnophis radix haydeni - Canadian Plains Garter Snake

Harmless Snakes in every sense of the word!

These snakes come from central Saskatchewan, Canada. They are a heavy bodied garter snake found in large numbers in some areas.

You can trap them using glue boards. Dave Salys and 330 Trapper should be able to help you with specifics. We don't have any northern snakes down here in FLA. They will be in hibernation by the end of Oct.

I have a related podcast Sep 8, 2010 Snake Removal Services with Animal Planet's Jason Clark. I also have alot topic related discussions in our public domain archives and you are welcome to see what others wrote regarding snake removal http://thewildlifepro.net/forum/topics/snake-removal-services?id=1998073%3ATopic%3A54270

The garter snakes are probably moving to their winter den. Check out this link and links within it- http://www.naturenorth.com/spring/creature/garter/snake1.htm
A couple youtube videos-

As was already said, they are harmless.

Unlike Schmidt, I don't care if I sound snotty.
Only a fool would want to purposely remove garter snakes from his barnyard or farm.
When they are small they eat pinkies.
When they are bigger, they eat the adult mice and an occasional rat.
Killing good snakes is like firing your best farm hand just for being ugly.

foxtail, just to show how correct you are, I had a wonderful customer that asked me to please bring her every snake I caught and release them in her gardens.

Thanks for all the info. I'm not questioning why, I'm just relaying info.
I know of some farmers who couldn't get them out of their house, so they abandoned the houses. But this fella has them all over his yard.
I'm not worried about it, just thought I'd ask the experts. Thanks again
