I've been driving my son to the same school now every morning since he was in Kindergarten. He's now in third grade.

Every morning, I pull in, wait my turn in line, pull up to the nice young lady who opens the door for him to get out, smile, greet her with "Good morning", maybe joke with her a little and bid her "Have a nice day!" then drive off. This scenario has been repeated hundreds of times in the last three years.

Never once has any body ever said anything about the gun or guns hanging on my rifle rack. until today... I saw him as we were pulling in off the highway. He was meeting us from the other direction and I watched as his gaze focused on my truck and his eyes went wide. Then up in the line ahead of me when the nice young lady opened the door for his brat I saw his lips fly open. He was griping to her, eyes still wide and glancing back at me. I knew then he was complaining about my gun rack.

As he pulled off, I saw her eyes roll as she turned toward me. Yeah, she thought it was BS too. She tells me that he was complaining about my guns and asked if from now on would I just lay them down in the seat so that they can't be seen.

Now keep in mind. We live in the rural part of the county and my son goes to a rural school. I suggested to her, "Tell him to get a grip! We're in Wayne County!". I mean, do people really think that the gun on my rack is something they have to worry about? Like I'm gonna show up at the school with the intent to do harm with my gun in plain view and pulling up in the drop off lane?

Just so you'll know who I am. I am a trapper, a hunter, a Civil war reenactor and a state certified wildlife damage control agent. Yes. I'm gonna have a gun in my truck from time to time. Now I'm supposed to rework my entire livelihood because some idiot doesn't understand that my guns are business tools? I even have the name of my animal control business on the side of my truck so if he had paid attention, he might have been able to put two and two together! I may at any time have any sort of rifle from a pellet rifle to a .22 to a 30.06 to a shot gun or a .58 caliber three banned Enfield! ... Or any combination of two! This morning it just happened to be a pellet rifle and my sons Daisy Red Rider BB gun.

No... He just wanted to gripe about something. He just wanted to feel like a big shot pointing out something. He just wanted the power trip thinking that HE got someone in trouble. He just wanted to be an %&$ @(^#!

Anybody else ever had this sort of experience?

This guy would have had a heart attack at my high school. It was an everyday event to see one of us carrying a cased rifle or shotgun into school. And this was in city of Milwaukee. Now here is where Salys joins in and says something about us having to be armed because of either the Civil or Revolutionary War!

It is a law here that a trapper must carry a .22 when checking traps in Georgia. Doesn,t matter if they are killer sets. The game wardens here, that have checked me, have all indicated they would write me up for almost anything out of line.

Used to trap just off of school property and on city easements. Just before I did,I went to the sheriff and he told me just to keep trapping. My sets at the time were approached by crossing school property. I was catching for the city and county depending on what side of the fence you were on.

I have got to go back in there this year. ----------- At the time the beaver were flooding homes and school property. That has been 8 years ago.

When I was in school as a kid, I always carried a shotgun and rifle in my trunk during hunting season. Even pulled a boat with decoys for duck hunting after school. It was common practice.

mHey dawg, I'm all on your side but the evening I walked out of a meeting and found my truck windows busted was the day the gun racks came down. Just saying.

Things sure have changed since I was in school.

I remember back in high school, you could look across the student parking lot and half or the vehicles out there would be pic-up trucks. Almost all of them would have a rifle rack in the back glass and nearly all of them would have a rifle, shotgun or BOTH hanging in it. We had an archery team and a rifle team in school and we were GOOD! It was nothing unusual for us to carry are weapons up and down the halls strapped across our shoulders on the days we had a meet. And every boy in Forestry class was expected to carry a pocket knife on his person at all times.

Something like what happened at Columbine could not have happened here back then. Just imagine if some nut case entered our school intending to shoot a bunch of people. He might get one shot off, maybe two, three, if he was extremely lucky, but then he would hit the floor with 5 or 6 bullet holes drilled into his forehead and a couple of arrows stuck in his temples!... And several pocket knives stuck in his back! wink

And what would our teachers have told us?...... "Nice grouping, Guys!" grin

Well since I was invited I'll just say I was thinking more along the lines of a spear rack at the back of the cave.

Times change, and not always for the better. Seems to me that the main problem is yet another city liberal moved to the country "for the good life" and can't break away from the old city ways. Likely thinks all you hillbilly's need to change your ways to his line of thinking, for the public good!

Would be funny if you mounted a cannon in your truck bed . The guys eyes would bug out of his head . Can't see there being a problem with having a gun in your window . Just tells people your ready to keep the peace . not sure what the law is on that because look at that kid that his mom packed him a butter knife and that made national news . My kids have pocket knifes so I'm always telling them to double check before school . I always get we know Dad , im just checking . This is a open carry state but on school grounds it's not legal . Can't even smoke when your dropping the kids . They hung a big sign for that rule

I graduated in 2005 and I had a gun in my truck every day. I had a Big Sky rack that was mounted to the ceiling in my truck. It always had an 870 12 gauge and a Ruger 77/22 mag in it. Nobody ever said a word to me. Our school had a policy at the time that if you accidently left a gun in your vehicle you could lock your rig, bring the keys to the principles office and pick them up at the end of the day. I never worried about that part but several of my classmates who occasionally left a gun in their car did. I don't see the problem and I am sure not many folks on here see an issue with a gun in a rack anywhere.
