Well, I don't know which I dislike more, HSUS or puppy mills.
Mo. is the puppy mill capital of America!

You don't like HSUS but you use one of their buzz words "puppy mill"?

Okie, That term is a long accepted term and an actual problem as I and many others would see it.
I grew up with dogs for hunting, dogs for home and companionship and just general mutts as well.

I still prefer the company of dogs to most humans I know, however we do have a problem in this
country, so whatever someone wants to call it, it is happening and folks should be called on it.

Just because a group like this one that I won't rename here, uses the term, doesn't mean it isn't valid.

I'm against that group for the other reasons that include their views on hunting, trapping, farming
and nearly all other things.

Just a thought...

Justin

I was just pointing out how easy it was to fall into the enemies rhetoric.

I'm against them for all they try to take away. United we stand divided we fall.

Another irony of the puppy mill thing is shelters importing dogs from other areas and even other countries for adaption at high prices.

Even worse are the morons that shell out hundreds of dollars for Puggles/Labradoodles etc, and think they're really getting something!

Puppy mills are just that: breed factories where dogs are kept in filthy conditions, no health care, bred almost constantly, never leave their cages.
Yes, I am a dog lover, and if I saw anybody treating dogs like that,...(bad words here).

As with anything else in this society, I don't blame the "Puppy Millers" any more than I do the stupid people who BUY these puppies. Let's face it, if there was no market, these folks would have no business. Just the same as a new truck only cost 36,000 dollars because people will pay it!

Labradoodles, pit bulls, rottweilers and other breeds are sought after not because they are breed for a specific job or purpose but because the people who pay big money for these pups think that it's "Cool" to own one. So, you'll see Joe Shmoe, who's never owned cattle or ever lived on hog farm, walking down the street with a pit bull on a leash because he thinks that it makes him look tough.

I've always had dogs. Mutts and pure breeds but the only ones I've ever spent money own were hunting hounds. Even then I think the most expensive dog I've ever bought was 250 bucks. I can justify that because that particular dog would scaled a deers butt!

Shepherds, collies, beagles and hundreds of other full bloods and cross breeds can be had as puppies for pennies or even free from good folks just wanting them in good homes. Animal shelters remain some of the best places to find new best friends and puppy mills don't make a dime off of any of these.

What we need to do to run these mills out of business is to make the free mutt cool to own again. If we can ever get pound pups to be the status symbol that labradoodles have become then we've got it licked! And the HSUS will have one less purpose.

While we're on the subject I had to show y'all this. These are the two newest members of our family. Buck and Megan.

Buck, the big one, adopted me while we were at the shelter looking for Megan, the little one.

He's my best buddy and has enough love in him to spend on Megan, me, my wife and son and still have some left over for company. At 72 pounds, he's big and clumsy at times but a great sparing partner for those who love to wrestle. He's not quite three years old and hopefully he will be with us for another 15 years or more.

Megan is a bundle on energy. Never still. Always bouncing around chasing sticks and chew toys, running with my 8 year old son, jumping straight up and down, chewing and jumping on Buck, grabbing his tail and ready to play anytime. Her day is 24 hours of fun with a little nap time thrown in for good measure. She's the best thing we've ever done for my son.

Both of them are smart as whips. Easily trained and house broken. After a long hard day, it's worth more than money to park the truck, open the door and have two wagging tails and happy faces to greet me before I can even get out of the truck.

If anyone is looking for a new best friend, my advice is to visit your local animal shelter and just try to count the wagging tails eager to go home with you. Every dog adopted is one less that is killed for lack of love and one less sale the puppy mill makes.

What Muddawg said.
Breeders (legitimate breeders) of dogs that can work (Working Dogs, Hounds, Sporting Dogs) will "Breed the best to the best and hope for the best" in a true effort to improve the breed. Anybody who breeds dogs for any other reason is just making pups.

A goodly portion of the puppy mill dogs go to pet stores.

Yep. if you need a purebred, buy from a home breeder. Insist on seeing the sire and dam (Mom and Dad) if he's around, and the kennel.

After an election like the one we had yesterday, it's more important than ever to own a good dog.

When my life goes to crap, it really doesn't matter because I know at least my dog still loves me.

You there.... dog lover.

I don't mean to be sturrin' up a ruckus my first day on these here forums, but uh your preachy attitude about canines; well your perspective is kind of narrow. You can watch a show about dogs on Netflix called "The Science of Dogs". I think you'd be surprised to learn that ALL dogs come from wolves and that yer little pets here were all bred at one point or another by man. My point being is that these "puppy mills" exist in the first place because people successfully domesticated the wolf and people like you have an affection for them. This is just the way life is.

The best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing. - Theodore Roosevelt

I don't think there's much perspective about it. Puppy mills are raided/shut down all the time here with the same reports: dogs standing in their own feces, dead animals lying around, no vet care, etc.
The last I heard, the jury was out as to which species domestic dogs "come from." Could've been wolves, jackals, or another species which I can't recall.
Truly scientific evidence exists on this matter. You need not rely on a TV show for scientific information.
But thanks for your opinion, and welcome to T-man!
