Well that is what I thought also, but I welded some with a 5p's some with 7018's and others with wire welder. I made them at all different time, and the only thing common was the coated nuts. The washer did fine, just the nuts that broke. But you may be right, I may have gotten them to hot and those are the ones breaking. I made a pile of them last season. I am going to use earth anchors this season on all my land traps. In fact I need to go out and make some proto types tonite.

I have used the Broshire stakes already and love them, but I am going to make my own out of conduit this season. I have a plan, I will take pics and show you what I am doing. I have to get off my but and make a jig though.

Ahh! was readin to fast before I typed, I am like you Gary, I dont pound mine below to ground.

Lot of good info here.

Just like to add, how important it is to knock the tread down smooth and least 6" down from the stake head. I know for a fact that coyotes are master stake pumpers, when they are wearing a trap on one of thier front paws. It is a natural reaction, that they rear up and pump hard. This of course is if you use short chains, if you don't it is no worry, but than you must concider thier lunging force when they hit that chain's end. Anyway's, I'd use a smooth edged swivel so it won't bite the stake, and a smooth stake surface where the swivel is likely to ride against.

Some good info here about rebar stakes. Do they make a tool to pull your stakes out? What all do you all use, or how do you manage to get your rebar stakes back? Thanks for the replies.

Drill a hole in a block the dia of the re-bar, and as deep as you want the washers. DO NOT USE TREATED LUMBER AS THE FUMES ARE TOXIC. This will keep the washer level and you can easily turn the bar while welding.

All of my sets are for cats and i normally use drags...but if I do stake I try to get the stake pretty deep and use 3-5 swivels on the chain...havent ever had one pull out the stake and dont have pull out problems with the traps...

I very seldom catch many yotes but I havent had a problem with them either...

LETS GET IT ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you clamp the ground wire on every stake?

Personally I use a grounded vise and clamp the stakes in so they stick up just a bit above the jaws and drop the washer/nut on and weld around it.

my rebar stakes are 18", and i double stake em, w/ nuts welded on, leaveing about 3/8 inch of stake above nut, after pounding em a few times, it doesn't matter if weld does crack stake will have mushroomed enough it will never come off. for a stake puller i use an old maddax, w/ a "v" cut in it, works great.

Camoman23 and ADC. Thanks for your replies. I probably should have asked that question (What do you pull your stakes with?) on a new thread, but I do appreciate the help.

By the way, my name is Doug.....trapped years ago as a teenager with my brothers and Dad. After many years in the Army, I am now ready to do it again. I can see by reading on here that there is a lot to catch up on (no pun intended), and I am so pumped! Old feelings are coming back. Already getting my supplies in order...picking up a few new traps.

Again, thanks.

Proud to be an American, where atleast I know I'm free.
