Jake there are many great lures/baits out there but what work in my area may not work in yours.

Per the rules of the site you need to put your location in your profile. (This also could help on getting more specific answers.)

Since you are new to trapping, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with the Forum Archives- http://www.trapperman.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/category/3/Archive . The archives will answer many of your questions before you even knew that you had a question! The archives contain information provided by some of the most knowledgeable trappers in the country.

One way to get a quick answer to your questions is to learn how to use the SEARCH features of the forum. For example a basic SEARCH for answers to your post-
1. Conduct a SEARCH for "coyote lure" (don't forget the quotation marks). After reading all of the 100+ results that look interesting, conduct another SEARCH for "coyote bait". That will bring up more than 80 posts containing that term.
2. Sample-

Those two features will help tremendously.

Jake,

Not to discourage you any but I've been trapping a long time now and coyotes are the toughest critter I've come up against.

Before making ANY sets for them, it's best that you read all you can read, watch as many videos as you can watch and learn all you can learn. Take as many trapping classes or courses as are offered. Seek advice from other trappers that are successful at coyotes. If you go out and start learning by trial and error, you'll educate more coyotes than you'll catch and trapping them will be that much harder.

One thing I've learned is that it takes a variety of baits and lures and patients is not just a virtue but an absolute necessity. Coyotes have an extensive range and it may take him days to come back to your set.

Another thing I've learned is DO NOT OVER BAIT. Too much bait at a set will arouse suspicion and the animal will tend to shy away.

Make your sets where they can be seen from a distance. If you have to walk up to a set to check it then you add your human scent to it each time you check. A good pair of binoculars are invaluable.

Sight attraction is key. Something odd or out of place arouses curiosity. An odd shaped stone, chard piece of wood, skull from another critter, chunk of dried bone or even at times a piece of trash that stands out from the surroundings may attract his attention.

Make your sets in travel ways. Coyotes prefer to walk in the clear where they can see all around them and well ahead. Old logging paths make good pathways for them. They will skirt wind rows, hedges and field edges. Openings through wind rows or hedges make good crossings for them. They could also be attracted to bare spots in fields and pastures. They will walk a ridge before they walk a bottom. Look for their signs in these places. Tracks in both directions mean a regularly traveled path. If you find scat, that means that he felt comfortable enough to pause for a moment and this will be a good place for a set.

When I first started, I didn't take this advice. I went out and started making sets and for two years of hard trapping all I got were lessons! The only thing I succeeded at was teaching THEM how to avoid traps and I educated a bunch of 'em. Now I have an area that I can't trap until the old ones either forget(not likely) or simply die out.

PLEASE!!! Learn all you can BEFORE making that first set. The last thing you want to do is teach THEM.

Yeah...The easiest way to catch coon AND possum... Make a set for most anything else! grin

Actually, coon aren't that difficult to catch. They are naturally curious creatures and are drawn to strong smells.

Give them a little sight appeal at the set. I have done well with cage traps by hanging my baits in the rear of the cage. You can play on his sweet tooth and hang a couple of marsh mallows. Along with this I like to drizzle a little molasses from the trap out toward where they travel to give his nose something to follow back to the trap.

Many have been caught on PVC pipe sets. Just a length of 3/4 inch PVC pipe with a 90 degree ell at the top. Drive the pipe into the bottom of shallow water to where the ell at the top is above the water just out of the coons reach. Place your bait inside the ell at the top and set a 1 1/2 leg hold trap just a few inches from the pipe. As he stands on his hind legs and walks around the pipe he will inevitably step into your trap.

Dog proof traps are all the rage right now. I have Duke dog proofs and Alcatraz dog proofs. Both work really well. The Alcatraz, while much easier to bait, set and clean may loose more than the Dukes. Bait 'em in the back, stake 'em down and stick 'em in the ground and your set is made. Fast and easy. If you're gonna do much coon trapping I'd advise you to get some.

Many different baits will work. Marsh mallows, sardines, banana pieces, or cob corn to name just a few. They also love fresh sweet corn, apple slices, different types of candies and various nuts. Back to my cage traps, I use peanut butter smeared across the pan and bed shelled corn into it. If one bait isn't working for you, don't hesitate to try something else or even something new.

If you are cage trapping, cover your traps across the top and sides giving them a tunnel effect. You can cover it with most anything handy; pine straw, leaves, grasses or even cardboard. Bait a little at the front of the trap to help him feel at ease eating near it.

That should be enough information to fill your shelves with coon pelts this season.

CAUTION!! If you are trapping for ADC purposes, you might want to stick with the cage traps. Get the family cat caught in a foot hold or have a some little kids dog stick toung in a dog proof and you'll have some irate customers on you hands.

If they are legal in your state...... SNARES! Great for yotes and coon.
