Little background info about me :-) I'm a longtime looker here on the forum, but I'm no newbie to the forum world I'm an adman on a bow fishing forum...
.here's the deal...I run a ranch in east Texas, I have lived here on this property all but 5 years of my life and now at 30 years old I have finally had problems killing coyotes. Growing up we had a government trapper come out and kill coyotes...as a kid I thought Mr Dayton House was the coolest person I have ever seen! Little did he know I listened to every word he said and watched every move he made...even when I was sick from school I wanted to ride around with him...thinking back he had snares everywhere and just a handful of #3 newhouse long springs out...he would come out for a full month at a time and he never left without killing 30 or so coyotes...I know we have coyotes and I do kill a lot of them year-round but...just this past week I ain't caught nothing but a red fox and one coon...BUT...I still see tracks everywhere...and hear them almost every night... My question is how many traps do you put out for coyotes? Per acre of land, I think I have too much steel in da ground...I'm a snare man but I love my steel traps but I think I might be over doing it...

Your original question was how many canine traps rer acre.

Fur trapping - find the pinch point and multiple set. Catch and go.

ADC trapping - set all over the property and maintain

I'm not a fur trapper...I just want to catch as many as possible. Sometimes it takes weeks to pick up a cretin coyote other times it takes one night...I'm kinda worried I'm educating them. I change up my sets and lure all the time so I don't edjucate them. But the past week has got me worried that I have too much steel in da ground and too much lure in da air.

Have you tried calling them in? If you have a dead pile somewhere show up in the morning s and dusk and pick them off.

The number of sets isnt as important as the amount of odor concentration at the sets. Keep things subtle in odor presentation and make a variety of sets, flat sets, walk thru, scent posts and dirt holes. See how they react to each type of set then go from there and duplicate the most effective sets.

I always set a variety of sets at good location areas however dont over lure or bait if you are looking to catch a specific animal.Snaring and blind trail sets will catch alot of coyotes also if you read the sign and know their travel habits or can create a draw station.

I would think that the area itself, the lay of the land, travel ways, choke points and density of the population would dictate how many traps to set. I don't think of how many traps I'm setting in one area as much as I think about covering all the good locations.

Then if there appears to be too many, use subtle lures. Don't wash the air with scents. Use sight attractors such as a chunk of bone, old skull or a light colored rock placed at the set.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies and the private messages! Calling coyotes out here is like setting off a burglar alarm. The only time I can call and get results is late summer when new pups are out and about. I'm going to try using less lure and think out of the box...I think I'm stuck in my ways and need to try something new! Thanks again for the replies and.

Bob Jameson is dead on about subtle . A true pro of pro's there's no way to fake this stuff . This man has wrote the book on both adc and fur trapping . Lure and bait maker that tells people to just use a little . Must be honest as well . WBG now that the coyote are on to you what are you going to do . It's to late for what you should have done but atleast now you have coyote keeping a close eye on your sets . . By adding this shocking size backing you could trick them into jumping into your traps . Some might even place a white 5 gallon bucket over there trap . After three days remove the shocker and you should have a coyote . Tricking the dogs into thinking you have pulled out .Things still need to be right . Trap bed must feel just like the dirt around the area . Fresh urine . Bobcat gland lure down a punch hole set with fresh red fox urine across the back side and the trap placed 18" back is a hard set to beat . I haven't found anything that makes a fox or coyote dig like bobcat gland lure . You could just keep it simple and hang snares . As a kid it took me 4 years to catch my first red fox . I had everything right come to find out . The local fur buyer which I even worked for skinnig rats was selling me this old no good urine . Finally one day I meet up with the right fox trapper that asked to smell the urine I was using . He freaked out said well that's the problem and handed me some good stuff . First night I had the first red and 3 more in 3 nights in the same trap . I took 12 out of that field that year . 37 the next year and that's off my bike . Got my driers lic and started catching over a 100 per year . That was before the brush wolf moved in . A.K.A coyote of a large size . I guess my point is have good red fox urine when after coyote . Traps must be tuned ,filed . Adjusted, center swiveled . Dye in log wood and waxed and aired out . Trappers cap is a must have so you can pack them traps solid so the K9 doesn't feel them . You get all these things right coyote become simple and it's just about the areas you have
