Main 2 reasons to use a drag is to allow the catch to possibly get out of sight of a road etc and also to preserve a good set spot for whatever reason...say a spot that is an extra good blind set that you don't want torn up with a catch circle. Also could be used in an area that due to rock etc it is difficult or impossible to drive a stake.

Tried staking in the west first, quickly gave that up, way too many types of soil conditions so no one size stake would work, not even two. Don't care to drag per se, don't like to waste a minute looking for a catch. But, if you have a dog, you're set. Learned a simple adaptation from the guys who lived on the left coast. With extended chains, 11 feet, we could usually find a quick hook up for a grapple quickly and you don't need big or heavy drags, just something to hook up which never came off. Used snaps for extenders so we could go to 20 feet easily when needed. Only need to bury the first couple feet of chain. When a catch is made the animal will be back in the brush out of sight. I still have the drag set ups I had 30 years ago and now even use them with snares. The long chain grapples, hooked up, make setting quick and no looking for a catch.

Okay, first of all Jim lives in New York and I'm pretty sure that they don't let New Yorkers go out west. And secondly, Jim can't be more than about 38 years old so he must have been in grade school to have 30 year old drags. ( I'm home alone and the phone hasn't rung, so I've got nothing else to do but harass people )
