Never dug up a mole mound but was wondering for example: you see 5 mole mounds heading North would you fine the run to the East or West of the mound or will the run be in the center of the mound.
I have heard not to set a trap with in 24 inches of a mound. But if I remember it right. Someone posted that they dig down on top of the mound and set the trap. I will have to look back in thearchivess.

Seems like I remember reading that was for a gopher not a mole. I could be wrong.

If moles, it doesn't matter as long as your working a horizontal stretch of tunnel.

When your setting traps on those horizontal tunnels, how many traps do you usually set? Say you set three and the outter trap fires. Will another mole dig around the dead mole and trap? Seems like the traps in the middle wouldn't get much action. How many main tunnels do you normally see in a let's say 1 acre yard? How many traps would you normally set on a yard this size?

You may find quite a bit of useful information on The Mighty Mole Trappers Thread . The thread was started in 2008, so some of the photos and included links are no longer available.

cannon, in my area the average count per acre is two to three and half a dozen traps if there are enough good straight line tunnels usually suffice. Two sets per run.
To the orinal poster, I never see mounds in Georgia clay but my understanding of mounds is that mounds are the excavated soil from deep tunnels. Every few feet the moles push this dirt up from the tunnel so by "connecting the dots" you can see the direction of the deep tunnels.

The reason you don't trap mounds is because most times the tunnel to the mound is an offshoot of the main tunnel. The moles dig these to have a place to put dirt. Sometimes you can catch one at the mound but you are more likely to get a trap full of dirt. As to how many traps ask yourself does this run just go from point A to point B or do runs branch off in other directions. Try to locate other runs off to the side that joins the the run you are trapping. Another thing to consider is if you have a group of mounds in a row this could be a new run where he is looking for a new resturant for breakfast. I always set twice as many as I think I need. If a mole trips a trap I try to locate that run a few feet away and put a different type of trap. Most important is get to know the animal you are trapping. If you don't know your animal how do you expect to catch him? Good Luck!

CT, I have read everything I can find to read on here and I am trying to learn my animal. That's why I am asking questions. Though I will go re-read the link LA posted again. Thanks for everyone's imput.

My ground here is like Warriors, we don't see mounds very often. Mostly just tunnels.

If the mole is just doing mounds nd not doing horizontal tunnels I would set the mound. Scrap it off and find the quartere size place he has pushed the dirt out the follow that tunnel down to the main tunnel then set your trap like you were setting it on the ground. I use the victor spear or outasite I think the no mol or Steve Albanos trap would probably be better for this set up but I don't own any. I you set the trap in the approach to the push out he will probably hve a dirt ball in front of him causing a miss.
The mount itself will hardly be returned to once the tunnel is completed. The tunnel it leads to has a lot of work put into it and he will be back.
So its a good place to set but if you can find a good place closer to the surface its less work and quicker.

Sleep'n with an animal..I can help.
Do not use both feet when testing the depth or temperature of the water

The OOS works very well in this situation also.
