I ask several questions about flying squirrels around christmas time. I got several good answers from everyone. I caught 2 at that house. First time I had ever seen one other than in pictures. Now I have a couple of more questions. Need answers from Illinois people who have delt with fliers before and our silly laws. I have another flier job going. I set the cage traps in the attic on Sat. afternoon. This morning, I had 5. The client called me a few minutes ago. I have 4 more. Question. In Illinois what can I do with them. Are they protected or not. Tried to get answers from IDOC with no luck. Just the run a round. Thank you for any help that applies to Illinois.

Jim

I've done quite a few flyer jobs. On my first (many years ago) I contacted DNR and was told to use cage traps and translocate (over 10 miles, under 40 miles) and that using lethal methods should only be used as a last resort. Of course there are no "written" regs on flyers, which is why I contacted them on that first call.

Since then I automatically treat all flyer jobs the same, using multi-catch or several single catch small cage traps, usually set on exterior and often in conjunction with one-ways. I've never used lethal traps for them, and simply price jobs accordingly. They may have changed their stance on them, as it's been almost 10 years since my first call for flyers, but I find it just as effective to use cage traps instead of snap-traps or something like a Koro design.
