I got a few of these last year and have not been very happy with them. I've been using a small peace of corn cob soaked in peanut butter oil, which by the way is very effective for grey squirrels when used in a live trap, stabbed onto the bait holder. I'm not having much luck with them and I need some tips from anyone that is getting it done using these. I really like the design and they are solidly built.

Ha! Rob! You remember me! My small business has come a long way since we first spoke!
The wire screen on the back is the missing link for me.

I put the wire screen on before I ever use them on the back of all of mine.

I screen off the back also or put the trap up against something so they can't enter from the back. I also fold up a square of hardware cloth and glue it to the trigger then smear my bait into the mesh. That way they have to work at it to get it out.

This is how we use them, I don't think I would use them as a baited trap, I don't know they are designed for that. This is how we have used them for many years, out of reach from kids and pets..

Also, try to prevent entry from the hole on the "left" side as seen on Robb's photo; the squirrel's head may prevent the dog (vertical bar that pokes into the trip pan) from flipping out away from the bail.
Think of a mouse trap with the setting bar unable to rise and release the bail or killng bar.

Great trap for grey squirrels but it has a design problem with the trigger. The trigger needs to be modified so that it does not throw the squirrel out of the trap. Another good trick is to add a piece of wood to the pan so that the squirrel has a bigger area to step on.
