Spent Thursday afternoon and all day Friday in my lift doing preliminary sealing on a hospital. It was 72 degrees.... started with a sweatshirt, but actually worked in a T-shirt from noon on. Now it's 33 degrees and snowing and sleeting. Typical March weather in Illinois.
Classic bat situation: I did an exclusion there about 10 years ago, as they had about 300 big browns roosting in the ceiling of the cardiac re-hab area. Bats would frequently get into the rooms and hallways. Gaps along the roofline cap (flashing) allowed entry over the walls, as there are spacers between the top of the bricks and the top 2x6 which the roofing wrapped over.
Installed deck screws every 18 inches around the entire structure (2 full days in a driveable boom) to pull the flashing against the bricks. No bats for ten years. New roof installed last fall..... you can guess: Bats inside the hospital within a month after new roof installation.
They called me last November after bat #6 found inside within a 2 week period. Inspected the structure and found the roofing company left the flashing gap exactly like it was when I performed the initial exclusion. Gaps all the way around again. The maintenance guy said he knew they would have problems again, as the roofers ignored his suggestion to eliminate the gap.
Luckily, the only place the bats are using is the exact spot as before over the cardiac area. Colony last fall was very small, maybe a dozen bats or so. Told them I couldn't do anything until warm weather due to proper adhesion and curing of sealants, but Friday was perfect.
I made it about 3/4ths of the way around, and the next warm-up will allow me to finish in about 8 more hours, including excluder installations. Last year was crazy with bat calls, and I have about 6 leftover from last fall that I couldn't get done due to the insane bat work schedule last year. Those will be first on the list for spring exclusions, after the hospital.
