Stopped in the Tractor Supply in Covington today and noticed the nice beaver dam in front of the store. The store sits just off a divided highway and the dam sits in a little ditch directly in front of the store and is fenced off like a retention pond with a four foot culvert running under the road and emptying into this ditch.
I just had to say something to the store manager but wasd very quickly informed that "those beaver are fully protected by the city". It seems the store owns the ditch but cannot so much as say boo in the direction of the beaver. They been denied expanding the parking lot to the road and when they cut trees out of the ditch they were supervised by the city to be sure that the beaver were not harmed. I was floored at the assinine stupidity of that and said as much.
What can you do when confronted with this kind of nonsense.

Smile and wave....of course! They need to live somewhere...

Hard to do much... Investing free time as a proposal for them to just take the information and go with someone cheaper...

Take pictures, come back after something really bad or expensive happens and take more pictures. Use pictures to sell the next job with similar problem:)

If it is a retention pond, then it will be on the lot plan that was submitted for storm water review.....

Building on the lot was contingent on approval of this storm water management....

Management has been compromised.....

Storm water retention pond are designed to release a certain flow rate..

Sometimes the Corp of engineers can help....

All I got to say atleast your tractor supply knows what a beaver is and so does the city . Here in ortonville Michigan at are tractor supply duck creek had beaver problem and they blaimed on local kids . They were building a new high school across the street and the beaver would plug the culvert every night and they thought it was kids not wanting to go to school pluging and flooding out the workers so they had the police steak it out one night to catch these pesky kids . They found it to be beaver not kids . The really bad part is they put the story on the front page of the news paper . I've never been so imbaresed to say I was from ortonville and didn't say I was from there for some time . True story sad to say

I've had a couple calls from different police departments regarding mis-diagnosed beaver problems. Both were from subdivisions where beavers had cut down trees in lawns along the lakeshores. People thought they had kids vandalizing property. Called the cops to report "kids chopping down trees at night." Cops were at least smart enough both times (different locations) to know it was beavers!

When kids are industrious as beavers, or will cut trees down with chisels fer God's sake...., give 'em a job!

Hey, give law enforcement a break here. If they would have been detectives they would have figured it out. Maybe.

Not only the police which I can kinda understand but the construction workers come on really not one single guy said hey that's a beaver there flooding out are construction site .

David I did a cat job for the Tractor Supply in Griffin many years ago...had some terrible problems with the associates letting my cats go. They all seemed to be those type if you ask me. All that aside, I could go into massive amounts of debt in one of those stores.
