I'm really liking this setup. It makes me look like I know what I'm doing. I like real snares more, but in my area too many off leash dogs.

Need to go get that special permit I need to use one . I do own one but haven't used it yet . They Plained on making the thing legal this year but I guess not yet . They will give you a 1 year permit I was told . Sent my buddy down to get his even yesterday after he gained a 3 banger coyote removal on walnut lk which there's nothing to set snares on . These Michigan legal snares are even more dog friendly than the collarum .

Baxter, Own a few, haven't "deployed" them yet, personally prefer non entanglement snare setups with relaxing locks (MI legal type). Used them for years and they are great, though you desire good solid trails and as you mention with off leash dogs, lots of opportunity to catch them (unharmed though). I can see wasting a lot of effort with dog catches.

How are you keeping the baited collarum to something that is not picking up the curious free running dogs though? Just curious as again I'd expect there to be plenty of curious canines grabbing the pull device too.

Another question related to the off leash dogs, are you running these at certain times of the day (or night) to avoid public issues? Part of my concern is always domestic dogs and people getting near a captured animal, in this case coyote. I've run jobs where I set at night and remove before dawn, pain but better than being on the news with a downtown coyote catch.

Would like some more details if your willing to share, pm if not.

Justin

The main bait theif is insects, bugs will clean the bite piece over night. Raccoons also lick it off. You just have include that in your price.
For domestics I put out signs for he owners and hope they head the warning. If you really want to get away from the bait ill use a Belisle foot snare. I do remove trap or disable it during the day sometimes. This last job I didn't though. The customer was seeing the coyote midday, and he was caught at noon. Had checked in the morning and no dog.
Really the worst part about collarum is dealing with the coyote on a leash and the whole securing business. Not because it is difficult, it isn't, because you might end up on film and it could look like abuse or mistreatment when really it isn't.

One more thing, there really isn't entanglement issues. The cable is so short they won't wrap themselves up if you do your part while setting.

Aaron,

Thanks good info appreciate you sharing. I have as you likely do some folks with a postage stamp who want the coyote caught, and it is in the middle of everyone and their brother seeing easily what is going on depending on landscaping. I have one right now with 4 coyotes in a larger yard, lots of mature trees and high walls so no neighbor issues or trespassers. I've got some belisle foot snares and like them too, though as I expect you as well, like the collarum due to specific nature of the catch. Definitely not questioning the entanglement, the collarum is quite short.

The free range dogs you are dealing with are they trespassing, or are these open space type situations? I run cams before I set for 3-5 days depending on how long to get a good feel for what is going on. I have had more than a few places where folks said, "no dogs are ever on my property" and there in the night or early morning were more than few over several days. Again, not that it hurts them to be caught, just dealing with the public issues in my opinion "cost" more.

Plan to use ours soon, have some opportunities to test them against other devices in the same setting.

Any info on the collarum is awesome so thanks for sharing Baxter . We all know it works but there's little info on it . Wcs does offer a little info and I was to one of his demos on the collarum but still i need more . Baxter if you made a DVD or had YouTube on it . I understand you wouldn't wish to have that info puplic do to the area your working so you could keep it private . Are doing any mods to it . It seems like the trigger should be more smooth . Have you tried it on fox .

Next time ill film set up and everything. I haven't tried it on fox. They are too easy to catch in a cage. I caught one the other day with marshmallows and peaches and cream.
The trigger seems fine to me. Want to make sure the animal has a good purchase before it fires. One thing that works for me is to wire a gopher to the trigger, that way the bugs won't eat it overnight.
Another thing if you can't run stakes and have to extend the cable to an anchor or some sort make sure to put a nail through where the stakes go. If that piece is not secured you get misses then good luck catching the yote.
