I believe that without proper bathing, sarcoptic mange can infest humans. As a matter of fact, I believe I saw it on a trapper once. ( of course bathing was really not part of his daily ritual )

Paul is correct, though various forms of mange are host specific, they can and do inhabit other mammals including us for a period usually not longer than 7-10 days. Saw too many coyotes on our project in MI that succumbed to this in the dead of winter, -20 to -30 degrees overnight lows and no fur whatsoever. Usually loaded with porcupine quills trying to catch what little they were able to at that stage.

Definitely a rough way to leave the world.

Yes- you can get it. I had a partner who dealt heavily in cleaned skulls and claws that would get mange salvaging what he could from nasty coyotes.
It didn't seem to bother him much- he would rub some motor oil on his skin and go on like it was nothing.

I have had mange a few times over the years on my stomach from fleshing and working with wild canines.It is short lived in humans but nonetheless irritating during the infested time period.

It turns out that my mange on my head was caused by age, and genetics. THANKS OBAMA!

I used to say in every talk I gave our field personnel and others about wildlife disease and parasites that you have to remember that the external parasite load is mobile and as soon as the warm bodied host that is now dead and cooling is not suitable, if you are the closest warm blooded substitute, they are heading your way. I've seen this with a wide range of parasites including fleas, ticks, lice (louse), and many others.

You don't have to live in a lyme disease, plague endemic or other special area to pickup and take home these organisms and have issues. Most may just go away after some itching and scratching and a few days of discomfort, others can change or end life as you know it.

Obviously mange isn't going to kill you, but worth mentioning there are other things that will, or change your health for your lifetime and are extremely hard to detect even with modern medicine and the wrong doc checking you out.

Got a call for a sick red fox. When I arrived, two gals were looking under the overhang of a beauty salon. This was a good hint. At first they wanted to wait for a rehabber but as long as I was there anyway, I thought I'd give it a shot.

Put two cages side by side, hit him with a beam from my flashlight and in went this poor, half blind, very mangy, red fox. Then the fun started.

Two beauticians popped out of the door and started screaming at me for taking their friendly fox. Then the other two gals asked what I would do with it. I said take a look at him; what do you think I'm going to do? Things were starting to become front page material when I was saved by a phone call.

The rehabber called back and said there is no way she can make it and that I had worked with her for thirty years and that they were darn lucky to have me. And yes, the fox certainly needed to be put down to prevent the mange from spreading. Obviously, hearing the same thing from another source was what they needed.

P.S. Yes, I was properly rewarded for my fine work. ( And I'm sure the beauticians still hate me )

give it a small dose of ivermectin and it will fur back up in a month or so.

Bob, from what I have learned, your cure is only good for recently infected adults and perhaps 75% infected young. ( I brought an infected litter in last year and the rehabber's vet told me that one more week, and they would have been incurable.)
