How well do they work for gophers? Any tips or tricks?

I agree with Bud that they are a good trap. The only problem I have with them is that they are really big, and that makes placing them more work--you have to dig out a bigger hole. But they have a lot of power to get the job done, so they are a lot better than the Macabees or the Victor Easy Sets, or some of the other traps that just don't pack enough punch to kill the gophers consistently.

I have imported some Cinch style traps from China and am putting on stainless steel trip wires, and will be selling them on our website soon.

The Cinch trap is a very good gopher trap. You do need a large cut out but they BED very nice and come in two sizes. Here the large size is a must for our over large Camas gopher. If you use a bait as I do to take their mind off pushing dirt a Cinch trap can be modified for not just a push trigger but a push/pull trigger.
When I get little one, babies, they have a habit of plugging things up after they eat the bait but with the bait zip tied to the trigger they pull and are in the right spot then.
Great trap. Eight bucks even with shipping is a good price. They run about 15 at the stores here.
