got a call last night from a friend who said something wiped out all of his geese.

whatever it was, scaled a chicken wire fence 4 foot high, carried the critters up and over the outside of the fence, and chewed the heads off.

my thought was a coon, but why would he just eat the heads off??

does this sound like the work of a coon or something else???

My next vote would be for gray fox. Only thing is, a fox normally would just take one at a time and take the whole bird away, back to it's den.

Just to kill them and leave them is generally the kind of behavior one would expect from domestic strays.

I just got back from checking it out, it was a coyote................coyote jumped the fence, grabbed the goose, jumped back over and drug it out in the muddy field.........saw the feathers scattered so I went to check it out.........saw the coyote tracks everywere around it....................it just ate the breast and head,,,,,,,kinda odd,,,,,,every coyote kill I've ever came across ate everything.........on examamining the fence I could see some of the fence bent at the top,,,,,,kinda looked like he got caught a lil on the fence,,,,,,,i didn't see any hair or fur though.

That's the nice thing about coyotes. They are absolutely and completely useless. When we never had them, we never missed them. Now that we've got them, the are nothing but a pain. If I could turn a switch and take us back about thirty years, get outta my way!

I am still going with a coon doing the initial kill and the coyote picking up the left overs by taking it a ways out prior to eating. This time of year it is a bit unusual for a predator to leave any part of an animal that size to be found except for some feathers and fur. They are carrying most food back to the den for the pups to feed on right now.

I would keep an eye out for a return from that coon if there is anything left there of interest to kill.
