A few of the pics from our last bird exclusion were worth sharing.... I've only been doing this 2 years now, starting the 3rd year but have done more and more bird mitigation. During this time I've made mistakes, missed things that caused me to go back and I've learned a lot to prevent these issues up front. These two photos are more just for fun, but reminders that the devil is in the details. This is true with any work we do as an industry, but with bird and bat exclusion I find it to be a daily education.

These aren't my installations, but I've made similar mistakes with netting and other products I used where I thought a little space didn't matter, or that a certain device might work that utterly failed.

Enjoy...

(for sake of clarity, this entire project was netted by our company with 3/4" stealthnet after all of this other material was removed including sound deterrent system, 400 linear feet of plastic spike and other things attempted by the facility with other contractors in the past. Lots of sticky and hot foot residue under all the spike and other surfaces as well for good measure)

My first comment would be how much more efficient the wire spikes are. ( Now I'm not real sure about the birds but I am sure about me. I have never bled from a plastic spike but I have never used metal spikes without getting DNA all over the place )

Seriously, I have put the metal spikes between the plastic ones and solved the problem. ( Not my bleeding, the bird problem )

Not sure what the issue is. Not only do the spikes hold the nest securely, I'm sure it helped make the baby birds safer also. wink

I can stand next to a box of nixalite and start leaking all over the place. Great product but definitely will make a pin cushion out of you.

The plastic ones while not as hardened are actually fairly sharp in this case. At least the contractor had used screws, most I see are glued down and most are falling off. This was tedious to remove it all, but looks sharp (in a different way Paul! lol!) with the netting enveloping the structure now.

You hit the nail on the head Mike! Every nest and there were at least 10 on this project were all nice and secure built between the spikes or on top of them. After removing the spike I had a few days before clean up and full install and during that time the pigeons tried to re-nest on the same site pictured, the result with our NM spring wind was sticks all over the sidewalk and no new nest! 40+mph wind can be an excellent excluder in itself!

What really make me smile was the realization spikes were protecting the audio deterrent system! (head scratcher)

Glue down is what I have seen the most of, usually liquid nails. Of course no one realizes the stuff does eventually break down and the spikes get knocked around and hang off the building. I don't do bird work anymore but if I did you can bet I would be selling longer term maintenance contracts with them.

Which came first, the speaker or the spikes? And you thought that only pertained to poultry.

They forgot to apply bird glue over everthing. And a scary thing for effect.

Yeh, the sticky gel helps hold their horrible nest in place.
