Just curious if any one else does fencing jobs as part of of their business?
I do them on a limited basis based on the size of the project, terrain, accessibility etc.
Started one today, just over 1,000 feet of 8 foot fence. Using 11 foot long poles. Actually started it with clearing the line of trees and brush a couple of months ago. Spent the day laying out poles, getting a start on punching holes in the ground etc.
Been a long day but it reminded me why I don't do this on a regular basis. LOL

See now, when I read the heading, the first thing that came to mind was an Epee. Everybody who knows what an Epee is, raise your hands.

We have this Issue with nuisance elk in NM. Only real solution is to fence them out. Takes a tall, heck for stout fence to do the job. The game department, in some situations, pays for the cost of material and delivery. It's up to the land owner to get it put up.

One of the pointy thingys that amatuer sword fighters try to poke each other with.

"Wink, you, like me, have a brain that's stuffed with useless trivia."

Results from living a few years and reading too much.

Suffer from the same problem, myself.

Dave, I think the word you're looking for is rapier. ( I learned to fence from Prince Phillip while I was at Oxford )

Tom, you're right. The one thing I miss since I started this business is reading. No time for the Best Seller list now.

Mike,

We've provided fencing estimates and have installed some for bear, deer and the latest is porcupines in residential lots. I know many landowners who have that issue with elk you mention and get hammered in the off season including loss of traditional fencing or damage at least. Think there is room to grow that aspect of your business in this state!

When I was in Oregon CREP projects through NRCS were popular to exclude cattle from riparian zones. Met many contractors while doing pig work out there who were installing some major fence projects, though as you mention, end of the day you know you were working on those jobs!

The high tensile fences for a variety of critters including predators has become very popular and you can buy all things you need local in most regions now days.

I say if you have the time, expertise and fortitude there are many fence types (exclusion) that can be sold and installed for clients and to the betterment of your business.

Justin

The above post shows the great differences in area and problems. This is an entirely new subject to me and my guess is that we would not be able to compete with the several large companies that install fencing all over our four counties.

Justin, please don't tell P.J. I don't want to own a fencing company too.

Have been looking at portable gas powered power washers too Paul, if you need any other ideas!

Ha, got you there Justin! I've owned a portable Craftsman power washer for a dozen years. Still work like day one. The wand I did replace with a heavy duty one however.

I also have an electric one that works fine. ( Ask any of my unsuspecting grandkids )

Paul, I'm thinking of a large tow behind unit with its own water tank. Lately I've run into too many clean up situations for birds that I could use a hot water power washer for, but don't have hot water, or even water in many cases, or power! smile

It is on my wish list, but wife decides which things she really thinks we need, which is smart because when I met her nearly 15 years ago, I was broke, bad credit and couldn't manage cash at all. Thanks to her I look great on paper these days and everything is planned out neatly.

I favor going with the strengths people have, she is organized and detailed, I am not - thus I make the simple decisions like what day of the week to do an exclusion or how much material I need!

smile

As you can probably tell, I am a big advocate on equality of the sexes. ( Yeah Okay, my wife taught me that ) But she also had two daughters ( Well, I helped a little ) who can probably whip my butt. You just need to promise me that the next time we meet, that you will introduce me to the brains of the family. And if you can only afford to have one of you come, it's your turn to stay home.

I wonder how many times I've heard that last line?

It's a deal Paul, the Vegas location is the closest but she has severe chemical sensitivities so between the folks with the gallon of perfume and cologne and the smoking hard to make that work. Probably not an ideal location anywhere, but would like her to get to a few of these as would I like to attend more events.

Paul, the other aspect of my upbringing I suppose I'd have to throw in, was that my mom taught me to shoot, and how to clean rabbits, ducks, geese, etc... dad was not a hunter though took me fishing all the time. Have always witnessed what strong women are and what they can do in any walk of life. Always glad to come across anyone who has the same education in that regard (whether wife instilled or not) smile

Nate - Thank goodness they came along aye?

Sorry Mike, back to fencing, think there is a lot of room for folks to do it for a variety of fence able species, just comes down to knowledge and salesmanship and other typical facets.
