HEY LT you guessed poke berries or maybe sumac for the number one food for coon in my area well the answer is hack berries,little red berrie that grows on trees ,they stay on the trees darn near all wintersome years. They taste like sweet tea to me. Hunted my walker female some last winter 32 of the first 36 trees that she treed on were hack berry trees, that was hunting around corn fields the majority of the time. Ill have to admit my dog has taught me as much about coon trapping and coon habits as l ever learned on my own, she showed me alot of out of hidden coon denning areas to. Heard red ohearn say he was in mississippi trapping one time he said the coon wouldnt take his bait because they were in the hacks.

These one's took a liking to blackberry oil and a little hunk of my Rodent Suprise Bait. Was hoping to get pictures of the gray fox that's been showing up on my deer cam, but this is good too.

I had a lot of coon pictures of up to 8 coons on this feeder but seemed to have deleated most. I put it up last year after deer season and trapped it at the end of the season.

You'd think more 'coon trappers would end up making cheap 'coon feeders out of PVC or something...

I usually just use this to give the turkeys some extra food in the winter. If the turkeys can get to it in a bucket or PVC pipe they will wipe out 50 pounds in a couple of days. I have tried it. If you take a couple pounds of corn and make a trail through the woods for a couple hundred yards the coons will be there in a couple of days following it up to the feeder. Yellow Yelper is the best (trailing scent) you can get.

I had a "cheap" pvc pipe and I had a feeder a lot like mikes, it was a lot cheaper than the PVC feeder. The PVC feeders would be emptied in a few days whereas the feeder with a spinner on it would last for a couple months. I think the one I had held about 150lbs of corn and I had it programmed for 2lbs every morning. It's better to give them a little every day vs. 50lbs in 3 days, gluttonous buggers

Can I single stake my coon traps on land or should I double stake them?

If you dont have to worry about a coyote getting into the set, sure. If not double stake them, cable stake them, or use a drag.

This is going to be my first year trapping. I'm targeting raccoons because we seem to have an abundance and we are tired of them eating our deer bait. I was given 6 long spring traps and I'm probably going to buy some dp's. What else should I have to begin the season?

They are #1 long springs. I also bought a few duke dp's.

I have heard some good things about the Duke DP's.
Caught is caught !
So if you can get a DP at a cheaper price that delivers the same results, your profit margin will be higher.

ADC how do u make ur pvc sets? How would u pvc set a lake/slugh?

Well, here's one trick that will work well.

Set it straight up and down, or with maybe a slight slant toward the bank.
Your PVC pipe is a 2" PVC pipe, about 24" to 36" long, depending on how soft your pond/lake bottom is.
The PVC has a 'wad' of insulation shoved in one in end, pushed in a few inches deep, the other end is shoved into the ground.
Paste bait,( preferably a ground fish ) is smeared down into the top of the PVC pipe, then a shot of fish oil.
The 'wad' of insulation keeps it from falling to the bottom.
Trap or traps are bedded out where the 'coon will stand trying to steal the fish.
I would prefer it in about a foot of water.
A big 'coon can take on a lot of water.
Trap(s) is/are staked in deeper water
You do NOT want the 'coon returning to shore.
