We have a few mulberry trees and they are ripe this year (and tasting great) but other than eating and attracting squirrels what are they good for? Thanks.

So purely edible?
I knew about the jelly, jam, and pie. In fact I have a fried making me a jam. I however did not realize you could make wine out of it.

heres another use for mulberrys you guys might not have heard of.
food to grow silk worms, silk worms eat only mulberry leaves. they are raised to harvest the silk gut from the worms . the gut is removed after the adult worm is dropped in a vinager solution to pickle them overnight. the gut or silk capsule is them stretched out to a length of about 12 inches then left to dry. this gut strand looks very much like monofilament and becomes brittle . strands are then soaked to get them supple again . three strands are twisted together and used to make an eye on a blind eye hook used to make classic atlantic salmon flies

john mclain raising them now in Michigan for the sole purpose of making twisted strands for fly tyers,a few places in California. you can purchased eggs , immature or adults he wants me to raise some here for him. mulberry trees out the waho growing here so I would have no expense on feeding. I have no idea why they eat only mulberry, but where they're grown in large commercial setups in Asian countries this is their food source. the comercial operations in this country also feed with mulberry leaves

the eyes on most of my flies have silk worm gut as an eye but I also use whale baleen or Icelantic pony tail hair

the mulberry handles coppicing (trimming) very well, has a very palatable leaf with 18% protein, and is used in many countries (and my farm) as forage for livestock. It is closely related to bois d' arc trees both sharing the same nutritional content (leaf). A hedge of bois d' arc and mulberry creates an impenetrable living fence that produces both fruit and forage.

Mulberry Tea

How to make tea

http://alliumcepa2u.blogspot.com/2012/03/how-i-make-my-own-mulberry-tea.html

http://www.mulberrytea.org/

Mulberry Tea Benefits

Mulberry tea is used to treat a variety of health issues including colds, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Find out the top 5 health benefits today. From Mulberrytea.org.

Cold Symptoms
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, mulberry tea can be used to treat conditions associated with the liver and lung meridians. It helps clear fever, headache, sore throat, cough, and red or painful eyes. Mulberry tea can also inhibit the development of bacterial strains, including streptococcus, the cause of strep throat. Drink mulberry tea to prevent and recover from common cold symptoms.

Weight Loss
Mulberry tea naturally inhibits
carbohydrate absorption. This is a
result of the compound moranoline
(1-deoxynojirimycin). Moranoline inhibits an enzyme in the intestinal tract (alpha-glucosidase) involved in the digestion of carbohydrates. This means the starchy, carbohydrate-rich foods you eat, like bread, rice, pasta and potatoes, do not turn to glucose in your body and are simply flushed out. The lack of glucose in your system also lowers your blood sugar levels, making you less hungry. Used as
part of a sensible diet, mulberry tea helps you achieve your weight loss goals.

Blood Vessel Health
Mulberry tea reduces the oxidization of cholesterol in the blood vessels, resulting in reduced risk of atherosclerosis (blocked blood vessels). This is due to quercetin and additional flavonoids contained in
mulberry leaves. These antioxidants inhibit oxidative stress reactions that produce atherosclerosis. For healthy blood vessels, drink mulberry tea as a regular supplement to a healthy lifestyle.

Blood Sugar Balance
Mulberry leaf tea can balance blood sugar and aids in carbohydrate absorption according to a 2008 study. According to Medical News Today, the herb lowers
post-meal blood sugar spikes and
stabilizes blood sugar levels. As a result, drinking mulberry tea results in more sustained energy levels throughout the day.

Diabetes
For centuries, mulberry tea has been used as a treatment for diabetes mellitus in Asia. One of the most unique qualities of the mulberry leaf tea is its ability to prevent sugars from entering your bloodstream. Researchers in Japan found that mulberry leaves contain compounds that inhibit intestinal enzymes from passing sugars into the bloodstream. This inhibitor compound known as 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), can only be extracted from the mulberry leaf.
By preventing large amounts of monosaccharide from entering into circulation, mulberry tea helps prevent and fight diabetes.

Prior to using mulberry leaf tea to treat any condition, please consult a licensed health care provider.
