I use them, I always check them early during the warm months. They will get warm. Sometimes a skunk will choose the wire cage trap if given a choice of the 2.

I am always amazed at the huge raccoon that stuff themselves into a 9x9 plastic catch.

I have had good success with Bridger Cage traps. I line them with a trash liner bag and cover with a canvas trap cover I sewed, not the prettiest hand stitching, but it works great. Skunks stay calm and have yet to be sprayed, caught 4 so far this spring. As for coons, they usually destroy the plastic but the canvas is holding up just fine. I would suggest investing in raccoon sized cages if coons are around. The skunks will wander into a bigger trap, but it is hard to get a big coon in a small skunk trap... just personal experience as coons run big here in northern MN.
